Sid Smith was the captain of the 2006 Men's Lacrosse team, the first squad to win a Men's Lacrosse title at Onondaga. The '06 squad was inducted into Onondaga's Hall of Fame in 2011. Smith anchored the Lazer defense that allowed just 4.4 goals per game. He was named to the NJCAA All-Tournament team, named First Team All-American, and secured Region 3 and Mid-State Athletic Conference titles.

Smith continued his collegiate career at Syracuse University in 2008, earning USILA Honorable Mention All-American in his first season and a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament team. The Orange earned their most recent NCAA title in 2009, where Smith recorded the ground ball to set up the winning goal in overtime against Cornell. Smith and the rest of the Orange defense ranked 4th in the nation tallying a 7.38 goals against average, the lowest since 1970. He was awarded Second Team All-American for the '09 season.

Smith was a member of the Haudenosaunee National team in 2006 competing at the International Lacrosse Federation Indoor Championship. He competed again in 2014, taking Bronze in the World Championships with wins over England, Japan, Australia, and the United States.

His career in the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League included a Minto Cup appearance in 2006 where he was awarded the Jim Bishop Memorial Award as the Tournament's Most Sportsmanlike Player. Winning the title in the following year, he received the John 'Gus' Memorial Trophy as the league's Defender of the Year as well as the Dean McLeod Award as the League Playoff's Most Valuable Player.

Smith was the No. 1 National Lacrosse League draft pick in 2009, selected by the Rochester Knighthawks, winning three league titles as captain of the 2013 and 2014 Championship teams.
