Mike Wheeler was hired to Onondaga's athletic department in 2001 as head of the Women's Basketball program. During his 2001-2020 tenure, he compiled an overall record of 509 wins and 128 losses (.799), making him the 23rd winningest coach in NJCAA Division III history.

Wheeler led the Lazers to the NJCAA Tournament 5 times, with their first appearance in the 2008-09 season. The Lazers appeared in the NJCAA title game the following year as the No. 1 seed, falling in the Championship as their only loss of the season, finishing 35-1. Wheeler and two of his players were recognized by the Syracuse Sports Corporation in the following May, receiving the the Believe to Achieve Award sponsored by OCC and the Pen and Trophy Center. The Lazers tallied 3 Final Four appearances, 5 Region 3 Championships, 9 consecutive MSAC Championships, and a 106 MSAC game win streak under Wheeler. He is a 4x National District A Coach of the Year, 4x Region 3 Coach of the Year, and 7x MSAC Coach of the Year.

Stepping down in 2020, Wheeler resumed his coaching career at Liverpool High School. Taking over the Girls' Varsity program in 2022-23, he led the Legends to a sectional title in his first season and two more to follow for three straight section 3 titles. The Legends finished as state champion runner-ups in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. Wheeler is a 2x All-CNY Coach of the Year and coached the All-CNY Player of the Year in 2023-24 and All-CNY Player of the Year finalists in 2022-23 and 2024-25.
