Box Score 2 The Onondaga Lazers and the Tompkins Cortland Panthers battled it out through nearly three games worth of innings during on and off snow flurries on Sunday afternoon. The Lazers completed two come from behind wins, including an extra-inning affair in the nightcap to sweep the Panthers.
Game 1- Onondaga 4, Tompkins-Cortland 2
The opener was a see-saw affair that saw good pitching and sporadic offense from both sides. Facing a 2-0 hole in the bottom of the third, Onondaga was able to answer by piecing together some offense. Sophomore Billy Clifford reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on sophomore
James Salamone's single up the middle. Freshman Zach Pieklik and Sophomore Josh Loeffler would bookend a sacrifice bunt with walks to set the Lazers up with runners in scoring position. Mitchell Hoalcraft and returner
Joey Lowen ripped RBI singles to give Onondaga a 3-2 lead that Canavally would hold on to.Canavally went on to retire the last 11 batters of the game, completing the 4-2 victory by allowing 5 hits and striking out 6 Panthers.Salamone paced the Lazer offense finishing 3-for-4 with 3 singles, with returners
David Heath and Mike Kasch contributing hard-hit singles also.
Game 2- Â Onondaga 7, Tompkins-Cortland 6 (12 Innings)
Onondaga and TC3 matched each other in shutout innings for the first two innings, before the Panthers would open up a 2-run third inning. The Lazers wasted no time in responding, cutting the lead in half by way of a one-out triple from Sophomore Josh Loeffler. Loeffler scored three pitches later on a Wilson Jimenez RBI groundout.TC3 would string 2-out hits together to increase the advantage to 5-1, but again Onondaga was there to answer back. Zach Pieklik worked his 4
th walk between the two games, and sophomore
Anthony Carrodeguas reached base via hit by pitch with two outs. Loeffler then hit a sinking line drive that was not handled by the Panther defense to cut the deficit to 5-3.TC3 would add another run in the 5
th for a 6-3 advantage to set the scene for the bottom of the 7
th. Carrodeguas used his speed to force an error to lead off the 7
th and Loeffler would reach four pitches later. Clifford brought home Carrodeguas on an infield single, before
James Salamone would lace the 10
th pitch he saw into right center field to tie the game at 6. Freshman Maxx Kies froze the Panther offense by striking out 6 over the next 6.0 innings, taking Onondaga into the 12
th inning. Sophomore
Amir Nitowski worked his way out of a two runner jam in the top of the 12
th to preserve the tie. Sophomore
Galen Hayes spoiled 4 2-strike pitches to work a 1-out walk in the bottom of the 12
th. After Kasch singled and
Ethan Wiedmer walked to load the bases, Carrodeguas blazed up the line to beat the first baseman to the bag to walk it off with an infield single to complete the sweep.
