Box Score 2 The Onondaga Lazers were able to beat the rain and sweep Mohawk Valley Community College in a doubleheader played Thursday, March 29 at the baseball complex in Syracuse, NY.
Game 1- Onondaga 3, Mohawk Valley 2
Mohawk Valley made its first visit to Syracuse since 2014 in what proved to be a well-pitched game on both sides. Sophomore
Kyle Canavally found himself in an early 2-0 deficit but from the 3
rd inning on pitched 5 shutout innings for the complete game victory. He would finish the game with a line of 1 earned run, 4 hits and 7K's. Canavally is now 1-1 on the season.
The offense finally put a run on the board when sophomore
Anthony Carrodeguas led off the bottom of the third with a triple to right field and was brought in on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Wilson Jimenez. Down 2-1 entering the 5
th Josh Loeffler would triple to deep right center field. With two outs
Joey Lowen would cash in on the triple, singling up the middle to tie the game.Â
With the game notched at 2 apiece, freshman Zack Pieklik would earn his first collegiate hit on a line drive to right field to begin the Lazers' rally in the bottom of the 7
th. Mohawk Valley would load the bases on a hit-by-pitch and a single to Jimenez before Lowen would be hit by a pitch in the back to force in the winning run for Onondaga's 5
th victory of the season.
Lowen would finish the day with 2 hits and 2 runs batted in.
Game 2- Onondaga 7, Mohawk Valley 2
In the nightcap, Connor VanDreason would work quickly to retire the Hawks 1-2-3 in the top of the first, allowing the Lazers to start game 2 with a bang. Leading off the bottom of the first Josh Loeffler launched an inside-the-park home run to deep right field to get the Lazers on the board early. Loeffler would finish 3-4 with 2 doubles, a home run and 2 runs batted in.
Onondaga's hit parade would continue, as Billy Clifford followed suit with a double rocketed to deep left center field. Rookie Sam Beadle would get his first collegiate hit on a single up the middle, and catcher
David Heath would record his second RBI on the season with a single to left center. Sophomore
Anthony Carrodeguas drove in Maxx Kies on a hard double to left center in the third inning. VanDreason would retire 14 straight batters before the Lazers' offense would add three insurance runs in the bottom of the 6
th. Carrodeguas and Loeffler would lead off with a single and a double. Clifford would walk to score a run, and Maxx Kies plated the 6
th and 7
th runs of the game on a single to left center. VanDreason's complete game victory was his second of the year. He struck out 9 on 88 pitches over 7 innings allowing just 3 hits and 2 runs, all of which came in the top of the second inning.
Onondaga opens up Region 3 West Section play with a doubleheader on April 3 vs the Corning Red Barons, with first pitch slated for 4 PM.
