Box Score 4 The Onondaga Lazers baseball team couldn't complete a seventh-inning rally in the series opener vs Broome Community College on Saturday, April 14. But the offense exploded for 38 runs across the next three contests to take three of four from the Hornets.
Game 1- Onondaga 5, Broome 6
Onondaga's offense began the game with a bang, with Wilson Jimenez working a 1-out walk before
Joey Lowen connected for a 2-run home run to deep left field to give OCC a 2-0 advantage.The Lazers couldn't't keep the Hornets from tying the game in the bottom half, but used a leadoff walk from Mike Kasch and a Broome error to recover the lead in the 2
nd inning.
Onondaga broke another tie in the fourth inning, with Kasch scoring on an
Anthony Carrodeguas RBI double.Facing a two-run deficit in the top of the 7
th, Josh Loeffler brought in Carrodeguas on a sacrifice fly. The Hornets hung on for the 6-5 victory in the opener.Lowen, Jimenez, and Carrodeguas registered 2 hits apiece for the Lazers.
Game 2- Onondaga 16, Broome 4
The Hornets took an early 4-0 lead in the bottom half of the second inning before Onondaga would put up 16 runs over the next three innings to give rookie Connor VanDreason his 3
rd win of the season.Carrodeguas kicked off the 3
rd inning for the first of his 3 hits in Game 2 to set the table for back-to-back doubles from Loeffler and Zach Krawczyk.
Ethan Wiedmer would bring in two more on a sharp single up the middle before OCC would score 2 more to take a 6-4 lead.Onondaga would pile up 8 runs on 7 hits in the top of the 5th inning. Lowen and Krawczyk would drive one in on doubles, while singles would do the rest of the damage.Billy Clifford and Carrodeguas would bring home 1 run apiece on singles, and freshman Ethan Blaisdell recorded his first hit for the Lazers to split in Binghamton.
Game 3- Onondaga 13, Broome 4
The Lazers again faced an uphill battle, falling behind early 3-0 before Jimenez brought in Loeffler on an RBI single. Clifford later added a sacrifice fly in the inning.Onondaga added 10 runs over the next three innings, paced by 2 singles from freshman Zach Pieklik and Carrodeguas in the 2
nd and 3
rd innings. Sophomore backstop
David Heath went 2-4 with 3 runs scored, while sophomore Mitchell Hoalcraft went 1-1 with 3 runs scored and 2 walks.Rookie Justin Bristol notched his first collegiate hit and RBI on a single up the middle. Adam Lupo won his second game in as many starts, and Kyle Korzeniwski finished the final 2.0 innings allowing 1 hit and striking out 2.
Game 4- Onondaga 9, Broome 3
The Lazers continued to score early and often in the series finale via Lowen's 5
th RBI of the series to give freshman P/OF Maxx Kies an early 1-0 advantage.
Carrodeguas led off the bottom of the third with a triple to left center field and was driven in by Loeffler the very next pitch on an RBI single up the middle. Clifford earned another RBI reaching on an error later in the inning.
Galen Hayes started a rally in the bottom of the 6
th, working a walk to be scored on a double by Carrodeguas. Loeffler and Clifford added RBI's in the inning, and freshman Chris Mozzotti earned his first collegiate hit on an RBI infield single to cap the scoring for OCC.Kies earned the complete game victory by striking out 7 and allowing just 2 earned runs.Lowen finished 7-for-13 and 5 RBI's, while Carrodeguas went 9-for-13 with 5 RBI's and 5 runs scored over the four-game set with the Hornets.
Onondaga (13-10, 6-2 Region 3) will take on the Erie Kats (10-9, 2-1 Region 3) in a 4-game set at the baseball complex in Syracuse, NY beginning Tuesday, April 17 in a doubleheader slated for a 2 PM start.
