Box Score 2 The Onondaga Lazers earned a hard-fought, grind it out split with Division II power Monroe Community College through the snow and the sunshine on Tuesday afternoon. Onondaga's victory in Game 1 gave Coach
John Sheedy career win #100.
Game 1- Onondaga 3, Monroe 2
Onondaga racked up three hits the first time through the order, including first inning singles from sophomores Wilson Jimenez and
Joey Lowen. The Lazers and the Tribunes would trade baserunners in the second inning and match a clean third inning before Monroe could push 2 runs across in the top of the fourth. As the snow began to fall in the 7
th inning, the Lazers offense was able to heat up. Facing a 2-run deficit sophomore Billy Clifford reached base to begin the rally.
James Salamone followed suit with a sharp single to the right side of the infield to put the heat on the Tribunes. After a sacrifice bunt from catcher
David Heath, Mike Kasch knotted the game at 2 and immediately put himself in scoring position on an error by the Monroe defense.
Anthony Carrodeguas walked it off for the second straight game for Onondaga, forcing a bad throw to first base, allowing Kasch to score the game-winning run.Â
Joey Lowen and Kasch led the Lazer offense with 2-for-3 performances. Sophomore
Dylan McGee earned the win with 3 stellar innings of relief. With the win, Coach Sheedy has now won 100 games in less than four years as Onondaga's Head Coach.Â
Game 2- Onondaga 1, Monroe 2
Following a 30-minute snow delay, the Lazers and Tribunes squared off in game two that saw very little offense. Facing a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning, Kasch stayed hot by working a 4-pitch walk with one-out. Rookie Zach Pieklik smashed a triple to the wall in right center field to tie the game at 1 apiece. Monroe would add their second and final run on a sacrifice fly to center field to answer in the 6
th. The Lazers were unable to mount any late inning magic and fell 2-1. Nitowski lowered his region-leading ERA to 1.17 by striking out 5 over 6.0 innings. Adam Lupo worked a clean 7
th inning for Onondaga.
Onondaga gets back to Region III play this weekend as they visit Broome CC on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 PM. Both teams return to Onondaga on Sunday. Â
