Onondaga Baseball is firing on all cylinders, getting out to their best start in over ten years. The Lazers are a perfect, 8-0, since returning home from their Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach, and defeated SUNY Broome 9-3 and 2-1 on Sunday to complete the sweep of a 4-game series over the weekend.
Game One: Onondaga 9, Broome 3 (7 innings)
Onondaga scored first in the bottom half of the second. After
Brandon Breen flew out to left field,
Chad Raychel was hit by a pitch and back-to-back walks were earned by
Terry Daniels and
Justin Germain. Raychel and Daniels were able to score on two straight pass balls before the
Josh Cosgrove and
Joey Lowen grounded out to short-stop to end the inning.
The Hornets loaded the bases in the top of the second inning on three singles, but
Sean Connors left them in their places with two strikeouts and a 6-3 groundout.
Brandon Breen increased the Lazers lead to three in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to right field, scoring
Anthony Sinicropi after his single to left field.
Broome's, Alex Kocan legged out a bunt to start the third, but
Josh Cosgrove picked up his pitcher by catching Kocan trying to steal.
Sean Connors closed out the inning with two straight strikeouts.
The Lazers batted through the order in the bottom half of the third, scoring 5 runs with 4 hits and 2 walks.
Terry Daniels took the walk to lead-off, followed by four singles from
Justin Germain,
Josh Cosgrove,
Joey Lowen, and
Anthony Sinicropi.
After a scoreless fourth, Connors forced three straight ground balls to close out the top of the fifth, and the Lazers added one run in the bottom half.
Anthony Sinicropi hit his third single of the day and moved to second with a single by
Anthony Carrodeguas.
Brandon Breen hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Sinicropi and Carrodeguas, allowing Sinicropi to score on a pass ball and increase the lead to, 9-0.
Sean Connors pitched four straight balls to walk the lead-off batter in the top of the fifth and advanced him to second on a balk, but the Lazers defense stood strong behind their pitcher.
Joey Lowen made the quick decision on a groundball to throw out the runner on second trying to advance to third base,
Josh Cosgrove got the second out when he threw out a stealing Hornet, and Connors struck out number three looking.
Broome attempted to come back in the top of the seventh inning by scoring three runs, but the Lazers middle infielders connected with two groundouts at second base, and
Josh Cosgrove threw out a potential stolen base at second base to end the game.
Sean Connors gave up 6 hits through six scoreless innings, accumulating 6 strikeouts and left six runners stranded.
Shane Krawec gave up 3 hits and 3 runs in one inning of work.
Anthony Sinicropi was perfect from the plate with 3 singles, 3 runs scored, and 2 RBIs.
Josh Cosgrove went 3-for-4, and
Chad Raychel went 1-for-2 with one walk.
Game Two: Onondaga 2, Broome 1 (7 innings)
Brandon Breen got the Lazers started in the bottom of the first inning as he beat out an infield single, and Breen was on the move when
Chad Raychel hit a deep RBI single to center field. Raychel was then caught trying to sneak up to second base after the throw at the plate for out number one.
Terry Daniels blasted a double to the fence in left-center field but was caught trying to steal third before
Justin Germain flew out to right field to end the inning.
James Salamone hit a Hornet to start the second inning and a single by Matt Bowman put runners at the corners. Broome loaded the bases with a walk, and a line drive to center field would have scored two but
Terry Daniels threw a bullet to the plate to cut off the potential leading run and
David Heath connected with
Josh Cosgrove at third base to pick off the runner.
Josh Cosgrove scored the winning run in the second inning. Cosgrove poked a single over the second baseman's head, advanced to second when
Joey Lowen was hit by a pitch, and scored on two pass balls.
Broome threatened in the third and again in the fifth, but the Lazers stood their ground. The Hornets loaded the bases in the third after
James Salamone hit a batter and gave up two singles; however, Salamone followed with a full-count strikeout and the Lazers defense came up big again, delivering a 6-4-3 double play. Broome attempted again in the fifth, but
Terry Daniels proved why he was chosen to the ABCA/Rawlings NJCAA Gold Glove Division III Team last year with a backwards grab at the center field fence.
Coach
John Sheedy went to his bullpen in the final inning and called on
Kyle Naugle to close the game. Naugle threw four straight balls to kick off the seventh, but followed with a three-pitch strikeout.
David Heath then showed off his arm, throwing out the runner on first trying to steal second. Naugle earned his sixth save of the season when he struck out Kyle Novobilski looking.
Terry Daniels went 3-for-3 with two doubles to left-center field, Chad Rachel went 2-for-3, and
Brandon Breen and
Josh Cosgrove both added a single.
James Salamone gave up 1 run on 5 hits and struck out three through 6 innings, and
Kyle Naugle struck out two looking and walked two to earn his sixth save of the season.
Onondaga is back in action on Tuesday afternoon at the Baseball Complex as they welcome the JV team from Ithaca College for one 9-inning game at 4pm.
