Onondaga Baseball defeated Northampton on Sunday afternoon by outscoring the Spartans a combined, 4-1, through both games.
Game One: Onondaga 2, Northampton 0 (7 innings)Â
Both pitchers set the tone in the first inning, as they both struck out the first batters and so the pitching duel began. The game remained scoreless until the Lazers put two across the plate in the sixth inning.
Onondaga was able to capitalize in the sixth off two Northampton errors and 3 walks. After
Mikey Espinal flew out to left field,
Joey Lowen reached first on an error by the shortstop, and Anthony Sinocropi followed with an error by the first baseman.
Ethan Wiedmer,
Adrian Adams, and
Brandon Breen then earned their walks to push two runs past home plate.Â
Coach
John Sheedy then called on his closer,
Kyle Naugle, in the final inning. Naugle gave up a single to start the seventh but forced a groundout to first base and two fly balls to center field to earn his third save of the season.
The Lazers only needed three hits in the win, coming off the bats of
Chad Raychel,
Joey Lowen, and
Anthony Carrodeguas.
Matthew Valin received his second win of the season with 11 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 4 hits through six innings of work.
Game Two: Onondaga 2, Northampton 1 (7 innings)
The pitching duel continued in game two with both teams going down 1-2-3 in four innings. The Lazers jumped out to a, 2-0, lead in the third inning and the Spartans responded with one run in the fourth.
Mikey Espinal and
David Heath started the third inning with back-to-back strike outs, but
Brandon Breen did not let two outs stop him from smashing a triple to left field that scored
Anthony Carrodeguas after he legged out a single. The Spartan's short-stop was then unable to handle
Chad Raychel's groundball, allowing
Brandon Breen to score the winning run.
Tommie Spinner pitched four straight balls to start the fourth, walking Franklin Ramires, and Northampton took advantage with an RBI double to left-center field. Spinner quickly rebounded and his defense helped him out with seven straight outs to end his six innings of work with 4 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 2 hits.
Coach
John Sheedy then looked to his bullpen to earn win number two, first calling on lefty
Sean Connors who earned out number one. Then the Lazers trusted closer,
Kyle Naugle, went to work. Naugle gave up a single to start, but followed with a strikeout and fly out to short stop to earn his record breaking 15th career save in a Lazers uniform. The previous record-holder, Bo Watson, recorded 14 career saves during the 2011 and 2012 seasons, and ultimately transferred to St. Bonaventure University.
The Lazers will host Jefferson Community College on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader starting at 1pm.
