Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Genesee Community College, 7-4, 4-5

Batavia N.Y. – The Onondaga Community College baseball team took game one of the doubleheader against Genesee Community College 7-4, but fell 5-4 in game two in extra innings.

Game One: Onondaga 7, Genesee CC 4

In game one, Genesee jumped on the board first with a run in the bottom half of the second inning. The Lazers would come back and tie the game up in the top half of the third. After back-to-back walks issued to John Larca and Avery Brooks to lead off the inning, a passed ball followed allowing both runners to advance. Nate Budge then drove in Larca with a ground ball to second base.

The Lazers would add another run in the top half of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. After Brandon Breen worked a full count two-out walk, Justin Mathers hit a line drive single to right field to advance Breen. Larca followed with a single of his one to drive in Breen.

Onondaga would add to their lead in the top half of the fifth inning on five hits and two walks. Paul Fitzgibbons led off the frame with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a single from Budge. After a double play and a Terry Daniels walk, Autie Ascenzi lined a single to right field plating Budge. Breen followed with a single to right field scoring Daniels and pinch-runner Adrian Adams. After a Mathers single to left field and a Larca single to the shortstop, Brooks walked on four straight pitches to score Breen giving Onondaga a 6-1 lead.

The Lazer would add another insurance run in the sixth inning on two hits. With two outs, Daniels roped a double to center field. Pinch-hitter Anthony Sinicropi followed with a single up the middle to score Daniels making it 7-1.

Lefty Sean Connors earned his second win of the season going five innings giving up three runs on seven hits. Kyle Naugle registered his fifth save on the year recording the final three outs.  


Game Two: Genesee 5, Onondaga 4

In the nightcap, the Lazers took a 4-2 lead off an Austin Hall two-run home run in the top half of the fourth inning but fell late in extras 5-4.

Onondaga put up one run in the first inning. After back-to-back singles from Brooks and Budge, Ascenzi worked a walk to load the bases and then Daniels was hit by a pitch that allowed Brooks to score.

After the Cougars tied the game at 1-1 in the second, Onondaga would retake the lead in the third. Brooks line a two-out double to center field and then advanced to third on a Budge walk and an Ascenzi hit-by-pitch. Sinicopi followed with a walk to plate Brooks giving the Lazers a 2-1 lead.

The Cougars answered again with a run of their own but Onondaga took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning after Hall blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence. Genesee scored two in the fifth and then one in the eighth to steal a 5-4 win in extras.

Danny Valerio started on the bump for the Lazers going four innings giving up four runs on eight hits and three walks. Zach Martz picked up the loss out of the bullpen pitching one and two-thirds innings.

The Lazers (16-5) return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader against Finger Lakes Community College (20-7) at the Baseball Complex. The opening game is set for 1 p.m. with the nightcap to follow at 3:30 p.m.
