Lazer baseball season ends in the Region III final

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Onondaga baseball season came to an end tonight when the Lazers came up on the short end of a 9-3 decision against Herkimer County Community College in the championship round of the NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament.  Onondaga had advanced to the final of the double elimination tournament by virtue of a 13-3 win over Erie Community College earlier in the day.

Herkimer took control early, putting 4 runs on the board in the top of the 4th to take a 5-1 lead and chase Lazer starter Reid VanWoert.  Brandon Nylin came on in relief to end the inning, and went the rest of the way for Onondaga.  The Lazers were never able to get closer the rest of the way, as Herkimer picked up 4 more runs while Onondaga could only muster single runs in the 4th and 8th.  Brandon Kapcinski had 3 hits to lead the Onondaga offense.

In the earlier game Onondaga batted around in the bottom of the first inning, putting 6 runs on the board and taking a 6-1 lead.  The Lazers added 3 more in the 2nd and 4 more in the 3rd and the rout was on.  Erie only mustered up 2 runs the rest of the way.  The game was called after 5 innings due to the run rule.  David Nuzzo drove in 3 runs on 2 hits, while Kapcinski drove in 2.  Staked to the early lead, Peyton Boice picked up the complete game win.

Onondaga's Pat Merryweather and Chris Rave were named to the All-Tournament Team for their play over the past two days.

The Region III All-Tournament Team and Coach and Player of the Year were also announced during the tournament awards ceremony.  The Lazers' Pat Merryweather, Jacob Shortslef, and Wes Randall were named to the 1st Team, while Chris Rave was named to the 2nd Team.  Onondaga head coach Lloyd Quick was named the Region III Coach of the Year.

The Lazers complete the 2014 season with a record of 39-11.
