Merryweather goes the distance as Lazers stay alive with a 4-2 win over Niagara CCC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Pat Merryweather scattered 6 hits and struck out 9 in pitching the Lazers to a complete game 4-2 win over Niagara County Community College at Veterans Park in Little Falls.  With the win the Lazers stay alive in the NJCAA Region III Division III Baseball Championship, while Niagara was eliminated with the loss.  The tournament is a double elimination format, and the Lazers had fallen into the losers bracket following a 6-5 loss to Erie Community College earlier in the day.  Likewise, Niagara was facing elimination following a 13-5 loss to Herkimer County Community College earlier Saturday.

The Lazers broke through early against Niagara as Chris Rave singled home Wes Randall in the bottom of the first inning to give Onondaga a 1-0 lead.  After Niagara tied things in the top of the third, Rave hit a two run homer to right in the bottom of the inning to put Onondaga back in front, 3-1.  Niagara got one back in the top of the fifth, but Ed Tagliareni promptly got that run back by leading off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to center.  That was all Merryweather needed, as he remained in control the rest of the way, ending the game with three strikeouts in the top of the ninth.

In Saturday's first game, the Lazers fell behind early, as Erie plated single runs in both of the first two innings.  Onondaga evened the game at 2-2 on Joey Picone's single in the bottom of the fourth.  David Nuzzo then hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, and the Lazers found themselves with a 4-2 lead.  Erie chased Onondaga starter Jacob Shortslef with three in the top of the seventh, but Nuzzo's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eigth tied things up at 5-5.  Erie was able to push across a run in the top of the ninth, however, and the Kats closed the door on the Lazers in the bottom of the ninth to come away with the win.

Onondaga will play next at 3:30 pm on Sunday afternoon against the loser of Sunday's first game between Erie and Herkimer.  The winner of the Erie-Herkimer game will then face the winner of the 3:30 game at 7:00 pm tomorrow.  If a deciding game is needed, it would be played on Monday, time to be announced.  The winner of the regional tournament will advance to the NJCAA Divsion III World Series, to be played May 25th through 29th in Tyler, TX.
