Box Score The Onondaga Community College women's basketball team's march toward a NJCAA Region 3 championship culminated in a convincing 97-80 victory over Columbia-Greene Community College on Sunday in Canandaigua on the Finger Lakes Community College campus. With the win the Lazers advance to the NJCAA national tournament that will take place in Rockford, Illinois on March 15-17.
Â
After an early 6-6 tie, Onondaga jumped out to a 29-20 lead at the end of the first period and continued its hot shooting, strong rebounding, and finishing inside play to take a seemingly insurmountable 55-29 lead by halftime.
Â
But Columbia-Greene fought back in the third period and cut the deficit to 10 points on the strength of a full-court pressing defense and the outside shooting of Region 3 Player of the Year Tanisha Edge who made eight 3-pointers in the second half on her way to a game high 43 points. The Lazers were able to weather the storm and build the lead back up to 16 points by the end of the third period – a lead that the team was able to maintain to the final buzzer.
Â
Onondaga was led in scoring and rebounding by
Sydni Eure (East Syracuse – Minoa) who had a team high 27 points to go along with 14 rebounds and Samantha Britton (Kenmore West – Buffalo) who once again contributed a double double with 24 points and 10 boards.Â
Michaela Whiteman (G. Ray Bodley – Fulton),
Rachel Scalisi (Fabius – Pompey), and
Shannon Foehl (Skaneateles) scored 14, 11, and 10 points respectively for a well-balanced Lazer scoring attack.Â
Karleigh Wucher (Onondaga Central) hauled down 13 rebounds while coming off the bench for Onondaga. Eure was selected as the regional most valuable player and was joined on the all-tournament team by Britton and Lazer point guard
Payton Noeller (Cato-Meridian).
Â
The seeding for the national tournament will be released later in the week. This will be the women's program's fifth trip to the tournament in the past ten years and the first since the 2013-2014 season.
