Lazers’ Defense Stymies Tompkins Cortland in Fifth Straight Win

Box Score The Onondaga Community College women's basketball used shut-down defense against Tompkins Cortland Community College on Saturday to earn an 88-38 conference victory in the SRC Arena and Events Center. The Lazers have now won five in a row including four straight in Mid-State Athletic action.

Onondaga moves to 15-4 overall on the season and 4-0 in MSAC play while the Panthers drop to 3-11 on the year and 0-5 in conference games.

Story of the day was the Lazers' defense that held Tompkins Cortland to 38 points, third fewest allowed in a game this season. Onondaga was able to force 34 turnovers while also recording 15 assists and out-rebounding the Panthers 47-28.

Alisia Griffin led the way for the Lazers on the defensive end after recording a game-high five steals and adding seven rebounds. The sophomore shot 9-for-10 from the field leading to her game-high 20 points.

After holding a 44-20 lead at the half, the Lazers used a Samantha Roberts layup one minute into the second half to kick-start a 19-0 run that lasted until 13 minutes left in the half. The run pushed the lead up to 43 points for the Lazers.

Onondaga had five different players score in double figures against the Panthers including Roberts who contributed 10 points along with four assists.

During the early second half run, Roberts found freshman Kumba Marong for a layup less than five minutes into the second half giving Marong her fifth double-double of the season. Marong finished the game with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Lazers would have one more offensive surge with 7:43 left in the game when they went on a 10-0 run capped off by an Emiko Powell layup with five minutes left in the game.  The run put Onondaga ahead of Tompkins Cortland by 50 which ended up being the final deficit in the game.

Onondaga saw significant offensive contributions in the contest from Powell and sophomore Brittany Anderson. Powell had 12 points to go along with five assists while Anderson scored 16 points with the help of two 3-pointers in the first half.

The Lazers will return to action at 4 p.m. on Monday when they take on nationally ranked Mohawk Valley Community College in the SRC Arena. Fans who attend the game could win a chance to shoot for $5,000 during halftime.
