Women's Soccer Goes the Distance With Nationally-Ranked Mohawk Valley

Box Score The Onondaga Community College women's soccer team opened the home portion of its season in exciting fashion as the Lazers battled the nationally-ranked Mohawk Valley Community College Hawks to a 0-0 tie on Wednesday after playing two extra overtime periods.  After 110 minutes of action, the game would be decided by a shootout, but much like in regulation, five shooters wouldn't be enough as the Lazers emerged victorious in the ninth round, 6-5.

With the tie, Onondaga moves to 0-0-1, while the No. 2 Hawks hold a 1-0-1 record overall.

After a scoreless first half of play, Onondaga controlled the tempo in the second frame, peppering Mohawk Valley's goalie with several shots, but the Lazers couldn't find the back of the net.  Onondaga's best opportunity came in the 75th minute when Bridget Field lined up a free kick, but the attempt sailed just wide of the cage.

As the horn sounded signaling the end of regulation, each team braced for sudden death overtime.  The Hawks looked to put things away early in the opening overtime period with two breakaway chances, but Margaret Choroser was up to the task, turning both shots away to preserve the tie.

The Lazers appeared to have won the game early in the second overtime period when Field ripped a shot into the back corner of the cage only to have the goal disallowed due to a foul, setting things up for a shootout as time expired.

Carlee Kingston, Rachael Gac, Kayla Sharkey and Field each had two shots while Gretchen Krzykowski, and Sara Yonta each had one.  Choroser made six saves in all including three in the overtime periods.

The Lazers will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Arnold, MD to take on the Anne Arundel Community College Pioneers.
