Box Score Canandaigua, NY - Onondaga Community College saw its season come to an end after dropping an 88-78 decision at Finger Lakes Community College on Saturday afternoon. The loss prevented the Lazers from qualifying for the Mid-State Athletic Conference playoffs. It also marks the first time in 14 years that the Lazers have not qualified for post-season play, ending the longest active streak among MSAC schools.
Saturday's first half was closely contested and marked by cold shooting from both teams. A 7-0 run to end the half sent the host Lakers into the break with a 34-26 advantage. The Lakers then scored the first 9 points of the second half to extend their lead to 17. Finger Lakes eventually built their lead to as much as 22, before the Lazers rallied to cut the deficit to 80-70 with 3:55 remaining. Onondaga could get no closer, as Finger Lakes held on for the win.
Dylan Verkey led Finger Lakes with a game high 20 points, while Brandon Bullock and Will Arberry added 19 points each. Bullock also pulled down 12 rebounds for the Lakers. Joe Piazza (Central Square P.V. Moore) led Onondaga with 15 points, while
Colyn Hanley (Jordan-Elbridge) added 13. Lazer captain
Tyler Bliss (Liverpool) and
Trevor Smith (Camillus West Genesee) chipped in 12 points each. Bliss,
Vaughndell Brantley (Cicero-North Syracuse),
Kyler Brown (Weedsport), Ben Honahan (Malone Franklin Academy), and Zach Loura (Fulton G. Ray Bodley) closed out their Onondaga careers on Saturday afternoon.
