Men's Basketball Clinches MSAC Championship Title

Syracuse, NY - Onondaga Men's Basketball finished the regular season 20-8 overall and 13-1 in conference with a win over Corning Community College. The Lazers earned the MSAC Championship title for the first time since the 2021-22 season. 

Garang Garang (Syracuse, NY / Bishop Grimes HS) led all scorers with 29 points over OCC's thrilling 87-85 win over Corning. Siyani Arthur (Brooklyn, NY / Brooklyn Law & Technology) contributed 24 points and 7 rebounds in the victory. Garang and Arthur made up over 60% of the Lazers' points.

OCC shot 41.7% from the field, 26.3% from the arc, and 57.9% from the freethrow line. The Lazers turned 19 Corning turnovers to 29 points and put up 46 within the paint. Outrebounding the Red Barons 42-35, the Lazers recorded 17 second chance points.

The Lazers manufactured a a 10-2 lead in the first four minutes before Corning went on a run to lead by as much as 12, and sent the Lazers to the break trailing by 9. Corning pulled away again by 12 to start the second half. OCC chipped away coming within 3 points three separate times before tying it up 82-82 with a minute remaining. A jumper put the Red Barons back ahead but quickly tied back up after a Garang bucket. Malachi Wilson (Brookyn, NY / Thomas Jefferson HS) put the Lazers ahead 1 from the freethrow line, giving the Red Barons a final chance to lead with 30 seconds remaining. A turnover and foul put the Wilson back at the line, going 1-1 but enough to give the Lazers te edge at the buzzer with not enough time for a final shot from Corning.

20-8 has earned the men the No. 4 seed in the Region 3 tournament, receiving a bye in the subregional round. The Lazers will take on the No. 5 Adirondack Timberwolves in the quarterfinal this Friday, February 27th at 7:30pm on the campus of Genesee Community College.
