Vaughndell Brantley (Cicero-North Syracuse) scored on a drive and was fouled. Following a tying free throw and a defensive stop, the Lazers' Joe Piazza (Central Square P.V. Moore) drained a 3-pointer to give the Lazers the lead. Onondaga then made 6 of 6 free throws in the final minute of the extra session to come away with a 107-100 Mid-State Athletic Conference victory over the Red Barons on Saturday afternoon. Corning had entered the game winners of 7 of 9 and in second place in the MSAC standings.
The first half was a closely contested affair, but after Corning's Shaquan Bennet scored inside right before the halftime buzzer the Red Barons headed to the locker room with a 6-point advantage. Corning extended their advantage to 8 to start the second half, as Jesse Teeter and Tyler Ladd connected on back to back three-pointers to answer a pair of inside baskets by Onondaga's
Tyler Bliss (Liverpool). Onondaga then climbed back in the contest, and when Brantley scored on a drive, the Lazers captured the lead at 65-64 with 12:49 to go. The Lazers gradually extended the advantage, and pulled ahead, 75-68, following 8 straight points from Brantley. A three-pointer from Piazza gave Onondaga a 91-86 advantage with 1:25 to go, but Ladd's three followed by a driving basket from Sayquan Chambers forced the game into overtime.
Piazza led all scorers with a career high 26 points, including 5 three-point goals. Brantley added 21, with all of them coming in the second half and overtime. Bliss chipped in 17 for Onondaga. Ladd paced Corning with 25 points, including 7 three-point goals, while Nick VanBrunt added 17 and Chambers and Bennett tallied 16 each.
Onondaga's next contest is a MSAC road game at SUNY Broome on Wednesday evening at 8:00 pm. The Lazers return home next Saturday, February 8th, for a 3:00 pm tip-off against Jefferson Community College in the SRC Arena & Events Center.
