Onondaga Community College defeats Cayuga CC in MSAC opener

Box Score Syracuse, NY - Trailing by 1 at the half, Onondaga Community College scored the first 11 points of the second session and kept the visiting Spartans from Cayuga Community College at bay the rest of the way in the Mid-State Athletic Conference men's basketball opener for both teams.  The 90-78 win also snapped a 4-game skid for the Lazers.

Onondaga jumped out to a 6-2 lead at the start of the game, but Cayuga responded by scoring the next five points to take their first lead.  The two teams then went back and forth for the remainder of the first half, with neither enjoying an advantage of more than 5 points. When Cayuga's Michael Guity scored with 1:34 to go in the first half, the Spartans held their biggest lead of the contest at 44-39.  Onondaga's Ben Honahan (Malone Franklin Academy) responded with back to back three-pointers, sandwiched around another Guity basket, to narrow the deficit to one at the half.

Colyn Hanley (Jordan-Elbridge) scored the opening basket of the second session to give Onondaga a lead that they would never relinquish. Two free throws and a three-pointer by Patrick Twiss (Mexico), followed by another Hanley basket and a layup by Tyler Bliss (Liverpool), and the Lazers were up, 56-46.  Cayuga's Glenn Taggart connected on a three-pointer, but Onondaga continued to extend the lead, and when Vaughndell Brantley (Cicero-North Syracuse) connected on a three of his own, the Lazers held their largest lead at 69-53, with 12:41 to go.  The Spartans climbed back to within 74-65 on a Guity basket with 7:02 to go, but Onondaga held Cayuga scoreless over the next four minutes while building the lead back up to 16.

Bliss, Onondaga's senior captain, led a balanced Lazer attack with 21 points.  Kyle Kline (Caledonia-Mumford) added 15, including 4 three-point goals, while Honahan, Brantley, and Twiss chipped in 13 points each.  Taggart paced Cayuga with 20 points, while Zaki Thomas added 18, and DeVaughn Johnson tallied 13 for the Spartans.

The Lazers go on the road on Saturday for a 3:00 pm tip-off at Corning Community College.  Onondaga reurns  home to face Broome Community College next Tuesday at 8:00 pm in Allyn Hall.  Cayuga will host Corning on Thursday at 7:30 pm.
