Onondaga CC falls to Jefferson CC in overtime

Box Score Watertown, NY - Jefferson's Dustin Pond hit a jumper with 11 seconds left in regulation to pull Jefferson within 1, then after Onondaga's Vaughndell Brantley (Cicero-North Syracuse) converted 1 of 2 free throws, Pond drove length of the court to send the Mid-State Athletic Conference contest to overtime.  Jefferson outscored Onondaga, 14-10, in the extra session to come away with the 93-89 win.

Jefferson started the contest fast, scoring the game's first 13 points and jumping out to a 17-2 lead 5:28 into the contest.  The Lazers responded, however, and when Tyler Bliss (Liverpool) scored off of a feed from Brantley with 4:13 to go in the opening session, the Lazers had come all the way back to tie the game at 27.  The lead then changed hands several times late in the opening session before Jefferson headed to halftime with a 39-36 lead.

Onondaga recaptured the lead, 47-46, when Bliss scored off of a pass from Joe Piazza (Central Square P.V. Moore) with 17:09 to go.  Onondaga gradually built on their advantage, and when Zach Loura (Fulton G. Ray Bodley) hit a pair of free throws the Lazers had their largest lead of 11 points, 64-53, with 9:34 to go.  The Lazers still led by 11, 68-57, after a pair of free throws by Ben Honahan (Malone Franklin Academy).  Jefferson then closed regulation on a 22-11 run to send the contest to overtime.

Jefferson quickly jumped out to a 4-point advantage in the extra session.  The Lazers battled back, however, and tied the contest on a pair of free throws by Brantley with 3:23 left.  Damien Jackson scored on a drive to put Jefferson back in front, then Brantley hit 1 of 2 free throws to cut the gap to 1.  After Pond and Brantley exchanged baskets, Kenny Thomas scored on a putback to give Jefferson a 90-87 lead with 55 seconds to go.  Brantley's putback with 35 seconds to go cut the lead back to 1, and after Thomas made 1 of 2 free throws Piazza misfired on a 3 that would have given Onondaga the lead.  Jefferson's Al Alston then made 1 of 2 from the line to put the Cannoneers up by 3, and when Troy McAdam rebounded Honahan's tying 3 attempt and converted one free throw, the Cannoneers escaped with the win.

Jackson led Jefferson with23 points and 8 assists.  Pond added 18 points and 16 rebounds and Thomas chipped in 18 points.  Kyle Kline (Caledonia-Mumford) led the Lazers with a career best 22 points.  Brantley recorded 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Bliss tallied 17 points and Honahan added 10 points and 5 assists.

The Lazers continue their road stretch on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Tompkins Cortland Community College for a 2 pm tip-off.
