The Onondaga Community College men's basketball team (3-4) will look to climb above the .500 mark when they host a pair of NJCAA Region 3 opponents this weekend. The Lazers, coming off of a road split at Schenectady County Community College and Fulton-Montgomery Community College last weekend, will tip off at 1:00 pm on Saturday against SUNY Delhi, then follow that up with a 1:00 pm Sunday contest against Columbia-Greene Community College. Both games will be played in Allyn Hall on the Onondaga campus.
Sophomore captain
Tyler Bliss (Liverpool) is averaging 14.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game for the Lazers. Bliss is also shooting a team best 56.9% from the floor. Freshman Torrence Commodore (Syracuse Corcoran) is averaging 14.8 points per contest in the 4 games that he has played in. He missed last Sunday's Fulton-Montgomery game, as well as two earlier contests, with injuries. Guard Joe Piazza (Central Square P.V. Moore) is averaging 14.1 points per game. He has also connected on 20 three-point goals to date, 7th most nationally in NJCAA Division III basketball.
Vaughndell Brantley (Cicero-North Syracuse) is averaging 13.9 points per game and shooting a team best 78.3% from the foul line. His 36 made free throws rank 8th nationally. Point guard Ben Honahan (Malone Franklin Academy) is averaging 9.7 points and a team best 4.4 assists per contest, while Ahmad McKinney (Syracuse Henninger) leads the Lazers with 8.4 rebounds per contest.
SUNY Delhi (5-1) is ranked #6 in the nation in the most recent NJCAA Division III national poll. The Broncos bounced back from their only defeat, to defending national champion Brookdale Community College, with wins over Broome Community College and Tompkins Cortland Community College last weekend. Delhi is led by sophomore forward Arif Mehmetaj, who comes into this weekend averaging 17.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Matthew Banton averages 16.0 points per contest.
Columbia-Greene (2-5) is coming into the weekend off of a72-47 win over the Bard College Junior Varsity on Wednesday evening. The Twins will play at Cayuga Community College on Saturday before facing Onondaga on Sunday. Sophomore forward Khalil Paul leads Columbia-Greene with 16.3 points per game. Freshman forward Jordan Hoose adds 15.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest.
Following this weekend's games, Onondaga will be off until Tuesday, December 3rd, when they will host Davis College at 7:00 pm in the SRC Arena and Events Center.
