Onondaga Softball hosted Cayuga Community College on Tuesday afternoon at the Onondaga Softball Complex. The Spartans arrived in Syracuse at the top of the conference standings with a perfect, 8-0, record in Mid State Athletic Conference play and they left with two losses by scores of 9-3 and 3-2.
Game One: Onondaga 9, Cayuga 3
Tori Duffy got the call for game one, and the sophomore hurler set the tone early. Duffy struck out the first two batters she faced and then fielded a grounder to put away the Spartans 1-2-3 in the first inning. Duffy continued her precision, giving up just 4 walks, 3 hits, 3 runs (all unearned), and collecting 8 strikeouts.
Cayuga drew first blood in the top of the second, scoring one run on a throwing error following a sacrifice bunt. The Onondaga bats responded in the home half of the inning, stringing together four hits for six runs.
Tori Duffy helped her own cause with a leadoff double to left-center field and scored the first run of the inning with the help of
Katelyn Stubbs' two-RBI single.
Amanda Prell followed up with an RBI single and
Nicole Sheffer cleaned the bases with a double.
The Spartans cut the Lazers' lead in the third, adding two more runs before
Courtney Piazza ended the inning with a leaping grab at second base. Onondaga was held scoreless through the third, but tacked on three insurance runs through the fourth and fifth innings.
Amanda Prell was perfect from the plate with 3 singles.
Emily Clapper went 2-for-3, and
Tori Duffy batted .500 with a double.
Game Two: Onondaga 3, Cayuga 2
Katelyn Stubbs started the second game with a single, stole second base, and
Amanda Prell moved her to third. With the bases loaded,
Nicole Sheffer earned a walk on a full count to score Stubbs to take the early lead.
Megan Brown was on the mound for the night game and despite giving up the leadoff walk, Brown struck out two in the first and struck out the side in the second. Cayuga capitalized on two walks in the third with a double to right field to take the lead, but Brown ended the inning with a full count strikeout.
Courtney Piazza tied the game in the fourth inning with a blooper single, scoring
Emily Clapper from second base, but Piazza was not done with the heroics.
Jazz Powless smashed a two-out double in the sixth inning, and Coach Bob Bates called on veteran
Micaela Madigan to pinch run. After a quick strategy meeting, the plan was in action when
Courtney Piazza hit a perfectly placed single to left field for Madigan to score the winning run.
Megan Brown pitched a near no-hitter for the Lazers, giving up just one hit and fanning fourteen Spartans. Brown struck out every batter in the lineup at least once, and finished the game with three strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh.
Onondaga travels to Broome Community College on Thursday, April 27th for a doubleheader starting at 3pm.
