Lazers Softball was defeated, 14-13, by Genesee Community College in Batavia, NY on Thursday night. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed for a later date due to weather.
Onondaga did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard when they jumped out to a, 4-0, lead in the first inning.
Casey Gray hit a single up the middle to get the Lazers started and advanced to second when
Amanda Prell was hit by a pitch. OCC loaded the bases when the short-stop fumbled
Jazz Powless's ground ball, and
Mati Ponsetti knocked an RBI-single to score Gray from third base.
Tori Duffy scored Prell with a sacrifice fly to left-center for the second run of the game, and the Lazers added two more runs off a walk and Genesee error.
After going down 1-2-3 in the second inning,
Amanda Prell lined a single to left to lead off the third.
Jazz Powless followed up with single to left field, and
Tori Duffy smashed a deep single to left-center to score Prell from second. The Lazers were unable to hold onto their, 5-0, advantage as Genesee bats sparked in the bottom half of the third with 7 runs off 5 hits, 2 errors, and a walk.
Onondaga went down in the fourth with three straight outs, and Genesee added to their lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth, followed by both teams scoring 5 runs in the fifth inning.
Amanda Prell hit her second lead-off single of the game to start the fireworks in the top of the fifth.
Jazz Powless punched a double to the fence in left field, and Prell scored from third when
Mati Ponsetti poked a single through the infield.
Nicole Sheffer then blasted her first collegiate homerun over the fence in left-center field, putting the Lazers back in the lead by two. The Cougars responded with 5 hits and 5 runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth to take back, 13-10, advantage to start the sixth.
Despite a three run deficit in the final inning, Onondaga's relentless offense kicked off with back-to-back singles by
Tori Duffy and
Micaela Madigan.
Nicole Sheffer then banged her second 3-RBI homer of the game to tie the game at thirteen, but Genesee was uninterested in extra-innings. The Cougars earned a one-out walk and a double scored the runner from first base to take the win.
Tori Duffy pitched the first 4 innings, giving up 13 runs on 12 hits and striking out four, and
Megan Brown struck out five and gave up one run on 2 hits.
Nicole Sheffer went 2-for-4 with two home runs for a season-high 7 RBIs.
Amanda Prell batted a perfect 2-for-2 and scored 3 runs.
Tori Duffy went 2-for-3, and
Jazz Powless batted .500 with a double.
Onondaga returns home this Saturday to take on Columbia Greene Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm at the Onondaga Softball Complex.
