Lazer softball defeats Jefferson in regional first round game

Box Score The Lazer women's softball team used a 4-run 3rd inning to take a 5-2 lead, and tacked on 3 runs the rest of the way en route to an 8-2 win over Jefferson Community College in the first round of the NJCAA Region III Division III Championship Tournament.  Onondaga advances to the Region 3B championship series, to be played this Friday, and if necessary Saturday, at Miemand-Robison Field on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.

Onondaga (22-5) got the offense started in the bottom of the second with Julianna Ferrari (Scotia/Glenville) leading off with a double. Jenn Deuel (Whitesboro) reached on a hit by pitch followed by a single from Kayla Kibling (Bishop Ludden). Brittney Sears (Phoenix) then reached on a base on balls followed by a double from Sammi Loveless (Central Square). A lead off triple by Allyse Burgos (Liverpool) and an RBI single from Whitney Smith (Port Byron) scored Burgos. Kayla Kibling then singled with an RBI scoring Smith. For the day, Kibling went 2 for 4, Loveless went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's, Ferrari went 2 for 3 and Smith was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's.  In the circle, Brittney Sears (Phoenix) went the distance giving up 5 hits on 2 runs and striking out 7. 

The Lazers will face Herkimer County Community College, a 16-1 winner over Hudson Valley Community College in their first round game today.  The two teams will play Friday at 12:00 noon, and again at 4:00 pm.  If they split, the deciding game of the best of three series will be played on Saturday at 2:00 pm.  The winner of the Onondaga-Herkimer series advances to the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, to be played May 15th through 17th in Rochester, MN.
