Onondaga Tops No. 2 Nassau in Week One

Syracuse, NY - Onondaga hosted the familiar rivalry between the Lazers and the Lions of Nassau Community College on Saturday afternoon on Wilbur Field, starting the season 2-0 after defeating the Generals of Herkimer County Community College on Wednesday.

The Lazers came out firing with four unanswered goals, forcing a Nassau timeout in the first 6 minutes. The Lions score their first goal out of the timeout, and another to follow, cutting the deficit to 2. After four scoreless possessions and a timeout, Sophomore Davin Bomberry (Six Nations, ON / The Hill Academy) found his third goal of the quarter at 3:36, giving the Lazers a 5-2 lead. The Lions found their first man-up opportunity at the end of the 1st, but Goalkeeper Damian Biersteker (Danvers, MA / Essex Tech) shut out the Lions in the possession with two saves followed by a crease violation to regain possession for OCC.

The 2nd quarter kicked off with an unreleasable penalty on the Lions for an illegal stick. Bomberry score two straight goals to take a 7-2 lead over the Lions. Both teams netted 2 goals each before Sophomore Trysen Sunday (Massena, NY / The Hill Academy) tallied his second goal with 28 seconds left in the half, giving the Lazers a 9-4 lead.

OCC netted three unanswered goals out of intermission, including a faceoff win and fastbreak goal from Sophomore Peter Resnick (Latham, NY / Shaker HS). The Lions responded with three straight cutting the deficit to 12-7, but the Lazers answered with another three, leading 15-8 at the end of the 3rd after the Lions netted with less than a second on the clock.

Trace Hill (Tonowanda Seneca Nation, NY / Akron HS) put in the first of the 4th quarter for the Lazers on an extra-man opportunity. The team of Takaronhiotakie Thompson (Akwasasne, NY / Massena HS), Tehokwirathe Barreiro (Akwasasne, NY / Salmon River HS), and Dominick Terrazzano (Billerica, MA / Billerica HS) capped off the Lazers' 19 of the day. The Lions netted three in the 4th quarter, but it wouldn't be enough as OCC took the 19-11 victory moving to 2-0.

Onondaga will host the Region 20 Dragons of Howard Community College this Sunday, March 15th at 1pm on Wilbur Field.
