Syracuse, NY - Onondaga hosted the annual Cara Bryant Memorial Pod on Saturday with Finger Lakes, Monroe, and Corning Community College. The Lazers went 1-1 on the day with matches against Finger Lakes and Monroe.
The Lazers went five sets with the strong Finger Lakes program in their first match. The Lakers had the edge in the first with a 27-25 victory, and the Lazers responded in the second with the same 27-25 victory. Splitting the third and fourth, the match was forced into a fifth set where the Lakers had the edge, taking the victory 15-9.
Cariana Wilson had 12 kills, Setter
Chylure Bucktooth had 34 assists, and Libero
Samantha Sovocool had 18 digs.
After a grueling five set first match, the Lazers took a 3-0 victory over the Monroe Tribunes, overcoming fatigue, 25-18, 25-17, and 25-20.
Grace Plewak had 9 kills, Bucktooth tacked on 18 more assists, and
Ella Beckering had 14 digs in match two.
In between matches, Athletic Director, Mike Borsz, and Kayla Bryant-Lewis, Assistant Volleyball Coach and daughter of Cara Bryant, spoke about Cara as well as her father, Hy, who just recently passed this past August and was a former Director of Athletics at Onondaga as well as Head Volleyball Coach, Men's Basketball Coach, Director of PE, and OCC Hall of Fame Inductee. For years to come, the tournament will now be named as the Cara and Hy Bryant Memorial Pod.
The pod moves the Lazers to 7-3 before traveling to Corning tomorrow, September 30th for a 6pm single match with the Red Barons.
