Watertown, NY - Onondaga Softball upset the No. 3 Jefferson Cannoneers as the No. 6 seed in the subregional round of the Region III tournament. The Lazers went 0-4 against the Cannoneers in the regular season, defeating them on Saturday in the first two games of the three game series.
Game 1 began at 12:00pm with a scoreless first two innings for both teams. The first run came for the Lazers in the 3rd inning after a lead off bunt from
Ava Falvo followed by an RBI single from
Paige Glassford. The Lazers held the Cannoneers scoreless until putting up another in the 5th after a Jefferson error put
Sydney Puttkamer on base who was then scored by
Erin LaVancha. Jefferson made it a 2-1 game in the 6th, but the Lazers scored tow insurance runs in the 7th with a 2-RBI single from
Brooke Nicholson, securing the 4-1 victory in game 1, with Puttkamer credited with the win on the mound.
Puttkamer returned to the mound in game 2, shutting out the Cannoneers until the 5th inning. The Lazers had a 3-run 4th inning, leading 5-1 headed to the 7th inning. With fatigue setting in for Puttkamer after a near complete two games, the Cannoneers put up 3 runs on a 2-RBI homerun and RBI single. With the tying run on first, a deep liner to left field resulted in a play at home to tag the tying run out, ending the game with a 5-4 victory for the Lazers and advancing to the Region 3B Championship.
The Lazers will face the No. 2 Monroe Tribunes at their place this Wednesday, May 14th at 1pm in another best of three game series, with the if necessary third game on Thursday.
