Lazers Respond to Finger Lakes with a Sweep at Home

Syracuse, NY - Onondaga hosted Finger Lakes Community College on their home turf after traveling to Canandaigua this past Sunday where they suffered two losses. The Lazers had a response at home with two wins over the Lakers.

Jesse DeMaintenon started on the mound in game 1 for Onondaga. DeMaintenon sat down the first three Laker batters with two strikeouts and popout in the 1st inning. The Lazers stranded Freshman Mike Ferranti on second base after a walk in the first inning unable to find any holes in the bottom of the 1st.

DeMaintenon was untouchable in the top of the 2nd with three straight strikeouts and five in total in the first two innings. Carlos Jara led off the inning with the first hit of the game beamed up the middle for a single. Jack Bushnell got the ball rolling with a ground ball that forced a Laker error and bringing Jara home for the Lazers first run in the bottom of the 2nd.

The first Laker runner reached in the top of the 3rd on a drop third strike followed by the first Lazer error advancing two runners to scoring position. DeMaintenon's first walk juiced up the bases for the Lakers with one out. A passed ball scored the first Laker runner, tying it up 1-1, followed by another walk to load up the bases again. A big strikeout earned the Lazers their second out hoping to contain the damage to just one run for Finger Lakes. But three consecutive hits through the infield scored four more runs before a strikeout ended the inning with the Lakers leading 5-1. Luis Suarez reached first base on a walk in the bottom of the 3rd. A Colin White single followed by a Laker error found the Lazers another run closing the gap by one run.

After a fly out, a Laker runner reached first on an Onondaga error but quickly thrown out stealing second base by Catcher Luis Suarez followed by DeMaintenon's eighth strikeout to end the top of the 4th with no damage done. The Lazers made up two runs on a Laker error in the bottom of the 4th inning with two outs, trailing by just a run with the tying runner on third. Two consecutive Lazer batters hit by a pitch loaded up the bases for Ryan Campbell, who scorched one up the middle for a 2-RBI single. RBI singles followed from Carlos Jara and Carter King to go up 8-5, scoring 6 runs in the 4th all with two outs.

The Lakers stranded a runner in the top of the 5th with two more strikeouts for DeMaintenon, holding onto the 8-5 lead and a chance to extend it in the bottom of the inning. Three strikeouts ended the inning for the Lazers stranding Ferranti after a walk and no runs scored.

A quick three and DeMaintenon's tenth strikeout for the Lazers kept the 8-5 lead headed to the bottom of the 6th. The Lazers put runners on the corners with no outs for Jara to knock them both in for a 10-5 lead and a pitching change for Finger Lakes. A Dante Santos sacrifice bunt knocked in a run to end the inning 11-5.

Two quick outs for the Lazers led to two Lakers runners reaching base causing a mound visit for OCC in the top of the 7th with DeMaintenon still running the show. A ground ball ended game 1 with DeMaintenon and the rest of the Lazers taking the 11-5 victory. Carlos Jara had 3 RBIs going 3-4 from the plate. DeMaintenon finished with 13 strikeouts bringing his total to 37 on the season.

Matt Krul started the mound in game 2, starting with a walk but stranding the runner on second after a groundout, popout, and strikeout in the top of the 1st. The Lazers got up on the board first on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Campbell.

A sac fly from the Lakers in the top of the 2nd tied it up 1-1. Cooper Brogan and Jeff Ralabate got on base to start the bopttom of the 2nd looking to reclaim their lead. Ferranti knocked in Brogan on an RBI-double for the Lazers' first run of the inning. A deep Luis Suarez sacrifice fly scored Ralabate for a 3-1 lead to end the 2nd inning.

A quick top of the 3rd with a strikeout for Krul gave the Lazers a chance to extend their lead. But a quick 1-2-3 inning kept the score at 3-1 headed into the 4th.

Krul added two strikeouts onto his day in the top of the 4th and held Finger Lakes scoreless. Nick Perrotta led off the bottom of the inning with a double and a stolen third base, 60 feet away for Ralabate who knocked him in on an RBI single to left field, bringing in a new Finger Lakes pitcher who kept the Lazers scoreless in the rest of the inning, but leading 4-1.

The Lakers struggled offensively with another 1-2-3 scoreless inning. A double play followed a lead off walk for the Lazers. Kevin Stewart reached first on a base hit but was left stranded in the bottom of the 5th, still leading 4-1.

A Laker triple with two outs in the top of the 6th scored their first run since the 2nd inning. An RBI double followed to score another, followed by an RBI single tying it up 4-4, all with two outs. A Ralabate walk led to a stolen base putting him in scoring position for potential to take back the Lazers' lead with one out. Luis Suarez took back the lead on a bomb over the right field fence. Thanks to Suarez, the Lazers led headed to the top of the 7th, 6-4.

Sam Gallager came in to close for Onondaga on the mound. Gallager put the game away with a quick three strikeouts and securing the 6-4 victory for a sweep at home over the strong Finger Lakes program. Matt Krul took the win on the mound with 8 strikeouts.
