Lazers Split with DII Falcons

Syracuse, NY - Onondaga Softball hosted the Lackawanna Falcons out of Scranton, PA. The Lazers rallied in game 2 taking a victory over the Falcons after a tough loss in game 1.

Lily Stevens got the start on the mound for OCC in game 1. The Falcons put up 8 runs on 7 hits in the top of the 1st. Three straight fly outs for the Lazers sent them to the 2nd inning still trailing 8-0.

A quick three outs in the top of the 2nd gave the Lazers another chance to score some runs. Brooke Nicholson drew a walk in the bottom of the inning as OCC's first baserunner, but was left stranded as the Lazers struggled to string together hits.

The Falcons strung together three more runs in the top of the 3rd inning after a lead off walk and extending their lead 11-0. Avalon Millard poked one to deep center field for a double but was called out overrunning second base to end the inning, still scoreless.

The Falcons put on 4 more runs in the 4th inning over the Lazers, now with a 15-0 lead. Sydney Puttkamer reached first on a Falcon error in the bottom of the 4th with one out, followed by an Erin LaVancha walk, putting the first Lazer runner in scoring position. A Falcon error on a ground ball hit by Nicholson scored the Lazers' first run, followed by another error on a fielder's choice to score another. The Lazers put up two 3 runs on back-to-back-to-back Falcon errors in the bottom of the 4th.

A walk in the 5th led to an RBI triple for the Falcons before a double play ended the inning with the Lazers last chance to come within 8 runs. Millard recorded a double in the bottom of the inning, but the Lazers were unable to string together any runs, falling to the Falcons in 5 innings in game 1, 16-3.

Millard got things started in game 2 with a lead off triple. Paige Glassford drew a walk for a first and third situation. Scoring on the throw down was Millard, taking a 1-0 lead over the Falcons in the 1st inning. With Sydney Puttkamer on the mound in game 2, the Lazers allowed Falcon baserunners in scoring position in the bottom of the inning but stranded two runners, still leading 1-0.

Grace Hoey sent one deep for a double with two outs in the top of the 2nd. A Falcon error scored Hoey for a 2-0 lead. The Falcons manufactured their first run in the bottom of the inning on a double followed by an RBI single. An RBI-double with one out tied it up 2-2.

Millard led off the inning with a single but the Lazers couldn't produce a run in the 3rd, still tied 2-2. A quick three outs kept the Falcons as they were, still tied up 2-2.

Back to back singles to start the 4th for Stevens and Nicholson preceded a base clearing double for Hoey for a 4-2 lead for OCC. A Falcon error put runners on second and third with one out, allowing Millard to load up the bases on a walk, but the Lazers stranded the three runners headed to the bottom of the inning with a 2-run lead. Two popouts and a strikeout for Puttkamer maintained the 4-2 lead headed into the 5th inning. 

Nicholson recorded a single with two outs but was left stranded with the Lazers scoreless in the top of the 5th. A lead off double for Lackawanna led to a RBI single, cutting OCC's lead to 4-3. An RBI triple tied it all up 4-4, and sacrifice fly gave them the edge, 5-4.

An error and two singles for the Lazers loaded up the bases with one out in the top of the 6th. A sac fly scored a run for the Lazers but ended the inning on a tag up to third. The Falcons loaded up the bases in the bottom of the inning and took back the edge on a sacrifice fly, 6-5. An error allowed two more runs to score, giving Lackawanna a 8-5 lead headed to the top of the 7th.

The Lazers loaded up the bases with no outs after a LaVancha single, Stevens walk, and a Falcons error. Hoey knocked in a run on an error through the infield. Kennedy Nash knocked in another on a sacrifice fly, and a throwing error tied it all up 8-8 on a fielder's choice. The Lazers took the lead on a first and third situation followed by another Falcon error, 10-8. Puttkamer added an RBI on a single through the infield before the top of the 7th ended with the Lazers putting up 6 runs to lead 11-8. fly out, triple, popout, rbi single, k The Lazers secured a big out number one and two in the bottom of the 7th. The Falcons put a baserunner on to follow with a stand-up triple, followed by an RBI-single to make the score 11-9. Puttkamer remained composed and secured the third out with a strikeout, taking the victory.

The Lazers travel to Herkimer on April 21st for a 3pm doubleheader with the Generals.
