Syracuse, NY - Men's Basketball hosted a pair of Region III matchups against SUNY Adirondack and Hudson Valley this weekend. The Lazers fell short moving to a record of 3-14.
Adirondack came out on Saturday with a 19-5 start over the Lazers. OCC then went on a 15-point run scraping their way back halfway through the half. The Timberwolves then proceeded to go on a 13-point run sending the Lazers into the half trailing by 20.
Regardless of a 7-0 run to start the second half, the Lazers trailed by a consistent 20-points until the 10-minute mark when hey started to claw their way back. They were able to cut it to 10-points with 6:30 to go, but struggled to hit an outside shot to bring the Timberwolves's lead below 10.
Sam Gallager responded to an Adirondack three with one of his own followed by a steal and a layup to cut it to an 8-point game. The Lazers were unable to stop the Timberwolves in the final few minutes and resulted in a 82-71 final score after
Gage Kielmann went 2-3 at the line fouled on a three for their Lazers last attempt to score.
Lucio Cole had a career high 21 points for the Lazers.
Back at it on Sunday, the Lazers went head to head with Hudson Valley. Trailing by a small margin, the Lazers made it a 1-point game forcing a Viking timeout at 10:29. The Vikings scored a quick 5 put of the timeout maintaining their slight edge over OCC. Lazers turnovers allowed the Vikings to take a 16-point lead entering he second half.
OCC trailed by as much as 21 in the second half. Catching the Vikings on their heals, the Lazers clawed their way back to a 4-point game after a 3-point play from
Gavyn Hogue.
Sam Gallager forcing a turnover and finding Joe Guerrero for another 3-point play cut the Vikings lead to just 3. A clear momentum shift to OCC resulted in three straight miss freethrows for the Vikings. OCC took their first lead of the half off a layup with just under 6 minutes to go. 2 freethrows from
Mohamed M'Baye gave the Lazers a 5-point lead under 4 minutes, their largest lead of the half. After several lead changes in the final minutes, and tied at 97 with under a minute, back-to-back OCC turnovers allowed the Vikings to take the edge for a 103-98 final.
Gavyn Hogue had a career high 20 points.
Gage Kielmann and
Lucio Cole each had 16 for the Lazers.
The men will host SUNY Broome in Allyn Hall this Wednesday, January 22nd following the women.
