Syracuse, NY - Onondaga hosted a great Region III matchup between the Lazers and Cannoneers of Jefferson last night in Allyn Hall. This was the first meeting of the two teams this season after having seen each other five times in the 23-24 season.
Kelly Seibt went with
Amiya Johnson,
Brianna Weaver,
Sarah Hirschler,
Kathryn Grainger, and
Jada Crocker in her first career start at home. Scoring was very back and forth right from the start. A three from
Lundyn McCutchen gave the Lazers a 17-15 lead to end the first quarter. OCC came up with a few big time hustle plays to start the second quarter leading to them carrying the momentum. Back to back to back threes from
Lauren Grainger, McCutchen, and Weaver resulted in a 5-point lead for the Lazers at the half.
OCC's shooting stayed hot to start the second half. With the score still staying tight, OCC kept a slight edge over the Cannoneers before they took their first lead of the second half with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter. The Cannoneers led 57-53 to enter the fourth. The Lazers came out with two stops and two baskets to tie it up right at the start of the fourth. Momentum shifted back to Jefferson giving them a 66-59 lead before an OCC timeout with 6:31 remaining. A few ate fouls on the Cannoneers gave them a 5-point lead under two minutes. A
Brianna Weaver jumper cut it to 3 with 1:10 remaining and gave the Lazers a chance to tie under a minute with an open 3-point look from Hirschler, but fell short. Another defensive stop led to
Mary Hamer going coast to get fouled on a make and a chance to tie it at the freethrow line. The Lazers trailed by 1 after the missed freethrow headed into a timeout. The Lazers let 9 seconds run off the clock before sending Jefferson to the line, putting them up 71-69. The Cannoneers came up with a steal in the Lazers' next possession and got sent to the line again to put them ahead 73-69. The ball fell into th hands of Kate Grainger for the Lazers' last posession with a jump shot that rolled out and ended in a 73-69 victory for the Cannoneers.
Brianna Weaver was Onondaga's leading scorer finishing with 16 points.Â
Onondaga will travel to Rochester, NY this weekend for their final game of the semester against the 7-4 Monroe Tribunes with a 1:00pm start.
