Syracuse, NY - The Softball Program hosted their annual invitational this weekend to kick off their first home contests this season. The team went 1-1 on the day with two hard fought battles being defeated by Division II Lackawanna Community College and defeating Herkimer Community College.
Game 1 started off with a strong offensive performance by the Lazers and putting up 7 runs in the 2nd inning. Runs were scored by every player in the Lazers' starting lineup. Consistent hits from
Zoe White,
Carley Cinquemani,
Kendall Cuyler, and
Olivia Colgan proceeded to keep the Lazers' lead until the 7th inning where Lackawanna put up 2 runs to take an 11-10 lead over Onondaga. An
Emma Kelly line drive double put them in position to tie it up, but the Lazers were unable to rally and were defeated 11-10.
Zoe White led with 3 RBI's in game 1.
The Lazers were back at 7:30pm under the lights for game 2 against the Herkimer Generals. They came out hot scoring
Sophia D'Arcangelis after a walk in the 1st inning. The game remained 1-0 until the 5th where
Sophia D'Arcangelis reached 1st on another walk and scored on an RBI single from
Bianca DeSellems to lead 2-0. The Generals found their groove in the 6th putting up 5 runs to take the lead. The Lazer's top of the lineup came in clutch loading up the bases with 1 out. After a walk from DeSellems and
Jenna Mills is hit by a pitch, the Lazers score 2 runs entering the 7th down 5-4. The Generals were able to scrape together 3 more runs in the top of the 7th bringing the Lazers' last-ups to be a tall task trailing 8-4.
Olivia Colgan led off with a stinger line drive double on the first pitch. Colgan's momentum led to the Lazer's next 3 batters to get on base. The Lazers scraped back to tie it all up at 8-8 with 2 outs, runners on 2nd and 3rd, and
Aubrey Fraher to the plate. Fraher is able to find a hole for a base hit to score
Bianca DeSellems for a walk-off victory.
Trista DeLong started on the mound holding the Generals to 0 runs scored until the 6th inning with 7 strikeouts. DeLong secured the win pitching her second complete game win of the season.
The 1-1 record on the day brings the Lazers to a 5-7 overall record. Day 2 of the Invitational has been cancelled due to the weather. The Lazer's regular season kicks off at home on Saturday, April 1st at 12pm for a doubleheader against Jefferson Community College.
