It was another game that will be remembered as an instant classic. It seems that every time the Onondaga Community College women's basketball team plays arch rival Mohawk Valley the game comes down to the last possession – and Sunday afternoon's NJCAA Region 3 final was no different.
In a game of runs that saw no less than a dozen lead changes, the Hawks emerged victorious with a heart-stopping 78-75 win over Onondaga. With the win, Mohawk advance to the NJCAA national tournament in Lincroft, New Jersey at Brookdale Community College beginning on March 10.
The nationally 3
rd ranked Lazers faced the #5 Hawks earlier this year with a different result (and 82-81 win on the road) – but on Sunday Mohawk used a strong inside game to defeat the host team for the second time in the regional final in the past two years.
Jordan Vaught (Bishop Grimes) led Onondaga with 18 points while
Kumba Marong (Bronx Leadership Academy) finished with 17 and
Melissa Bakowski (West Genesee) tallied 12 in the loss. Chelsea Gibson scored 18 points in the win.
Onondaga finishes the season with a 29-4 record while Mohawk goes into the national tournament with a 27-4 record.
