For the 7th consecutive year the Onondaga Community College women's basketball team is the Mid State Athletic Conference Tournament Champion – with an 84-56 win over Corning Community College. With the win, the Lazers extended their streak of consecutive in-conference wins to 98 and upped its season record to 27-3. #1 seeded Onondaga will begin its quest for an NJCAA Regional championship beginning on Tuesday night at 6pm at Allyn Hall Gym with a quarterfinal game against the #8 seed.
Tournament Most Outstanding Player Melissa Bakowski (West Genesee) had 20 points and 10 rebounds while Jordan Vaught (Bishop Grimes) had 16 points on three 3-pointers and 7 foul shots. After a close first half that featured several lead changes, the Lazers forged ahead for good with a 23-13 second period that helped them establish a 42-30 halftime lead. Onondaga continued to build the lead during the second half due to strong performances from Bakowski and Vaught along with Casey Gray (Auburn) who hit two crucial 3-point shots midway through the half. Janee Joyner (Geneva) and Morgan Deland (Marcellus) provided some solid inside play in the victory.
If Onondaga gets past the quarterfinal on Tuesday, they will host the Regional tournament beginning on Saturday, February 27.
