The top-seeded Onondaga Community College men's lacrosse team will look to capture its seventh straight national championship and ninth in the last ten years beginning Saturday when it heads south for the 2015 NJCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship in Baltimore, Md.
The Lazers will open the four-team tournament against fellow Region III member, Genesee Community College while second-seeded Nassau will battle third-seeded CCBC-Essex, which will be playing on its home field in the other semifinal pairing.  The winner of each will then duel for the right to hoist their sport's top prize on Sunday.

We're Going Streaking!: Not that kind of streaking…we're talking about winning streaks.  By now many people are aware that Onondaga has won a lot of games in a row – actually the Lazers recently broke the NJCAA's all-time mark for consecutive wins across all sports and divisions with their 98th straight victory on April 13.  Onondaga has since extended that mark to 103 straight decisions.  The Lazers have some other pretty impressive streaks going that you may not be aware of.  Onondaga recently won its 11th consecutive Region III title and secured its 15th straight Mid-State Athletic Conference Championship this season as well.
Offensive Juggernaut: When it comes to offensive firepower, Onondaga is in a class of its own.  Entering the weekend, the Lazers have outscored their opponents 415-42 this season.  The next closest team, CCBC-Essex, has managed 297 goals – 118 fewer than Onondaga in the same number of games (16).  Head coach
Chuck Wilbur's squad has scored 30 or more goals three times this season.  It's not just one or two players that have contributed either.  The Lazers boast 12 players who have managed at least 20 points during the 2015 campaign led by
Matt Bennett's 73 points.
The Last Line of Defense: Obviously being good offensively helps, but if you can't stop the other team from putting the ball into the back of the cage, you're in trouble.  The Lazers feature what many would consider to be the best goalie in the junior college ranks as
Holden McDonald leads the nation in save percentage (.759), goals against (28) and goals against average (3.37).  The Toronto native has made 15 appearances in net for the Lazers and has made double-digit saves three times including a career-high 23 stops in a win over CCBC-Essex earlier in the year.
Sean Rhodes and
Jack Sweeney have proven to be reliable in net as well, combining for 48 saves in nearly 400 minutes of action.
Familiar Foes: The Lazers are quite familiar with all of the remaining three teams that will be vying for the crown.  Onondaga has played Genesee twice already this season with the Lazers coming away with a win in each game after outscoring the Cougars by a combined 40-12.  Onondaga's closest game this season came in a five-goal decision at Essex as the Lazers earned an 11-6 win.  Onondaga did not face Nassau in the 2015 season, however, the two programs have met in the NJCAA title game in each of the past three seasons.  Dating back to 2006, Onondaga has posted a 37-3 record against its three challengers.  The Lazers have gone 12-1 against Essex, 13-2 against Nassau and are unbeaten in 12 games against Genesee.  Onondaga has faced Genesee in the semifinal round of the NJCAA National Championship three times since 2010.
Old Reliable: Onondaga's defense can't be overlooked after what its accomplished this season. Sophomores
Tyson Bell,
Oakley Thomas and
Dan Scanlon picked up right where they left off last season as the trio has started every game at long stick for the Lazers during the 2015 campaign.  Bell and Thomas were both named All-American a season ago and it's no surprise that Onondaga leads the nation in caused turnovers, ground balls and claims the lowest goals against average of any team in the country.
If X Marks the Spot…: Then the Lazers have found gold in freshman face-off specialists,
Sam Watts,
Seth DeLisle and
Doug Jamieson.  Entering the Championship, Jamieson leads the nation in winning percentage overall (minimum 100 attempts) with a .811 winning percentage (116-143) while Watts ranks second with a .784 winning percentage (156-199).  DeLisle has been nearly unbeatable also after winning at an .833 clip (84-94).
Scouting Genesee: The Cougars earned their way into the final four after holding on to beat fifth-seeded Suffolk County Community College, 11-9, in the quarterfinal round this past Tuesday.  Genesee has won 12 games this season including wins over nationally-ranked SUNY Delhi and Finger Lakes.  The Cougars have six players that have scored at least 20 points this season and are led by Jacob Bomberry's 75 points (39 goals, 36 assists), which ranks fourth-most among all NJCAA players.  Cyrus Spruce leads the team in goals scored with 43 while Corey Luty has totaled 99 saves in net to go along with a 7.52 goals against average which is fifth-best among all goalies.
Scouting Nassau: Nassau has been perhaps the Lazers' biggest competition for the nation's top overall ranking this season after holding down the No. 2 spot in the national poll all season.  Nassau has not lost since last season's title game, posting a win in 13 games since.  Nassau also boasts the nation's leading scorer in Josh Byrne who has compiled 71 goals and 99 points in only 11 games this season.  As a team, Nassau ranks third in the country with 267 goals scored with seven players notching 30 points or more.  Brandon Watson has contributed 34 goals and 30 assists at attack this year while Chris Martinez finished the regular season with 40 points in all.  Nassau also boasts a solid keeper as Matt Liantonio ranks fifth-best in the nation in save percentage (.651) and fourth in goals against (59).
Scouting CCBC-Essex: The Knights enter the field as the third seeded team and advanced to the semifinals after defeating sixth-seeded Brookdale in the quarterfinals, 31-6.
Essex has posted 14 wins in 16 games this season and ranks second overall among all teams with 297 goals.  The Knights have two players ranked in the top 15 in the nation in goals scored and are led by Cole Rainer's 80 points, which is second-most of any player in the NJCAA this season.  Eight players have scored 20 points or more for head coach Shawn Burke.  Outside of McDonald, Essex may have one of the nation's top goal minders as Max Edlemann ranks second in save percentage (.716) and goals against average (5.71).
