Men's Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker in National Championship to Harford

Bel Air, MD - Onondaga Men's Lacrosse attended the NJCAA Championship this weekend hosted by Harford Community College. The Lazers entered as the No. 2 seed to face Nassau Community College in the semifinal round. The Lazers advanced to their 14th NJCAA title game appearance with a 25-15 victory over the Lions. The Harford Owls upset the No. 1 Howard Dragons to advance to the title game, where they defeated OCC in a 18-17 battle.

OCC kicked off at 4pm on Saturday night with the Nassau Lions. The Lazers set the tone early with a quick faceoff win and goal from Sophomore Peter Resnick (Latham, NY / Shaker HS). After a response from the Lions, OCC went on to net three straight with two from Trysen Sunday (Akwasasne, NY / Massena HS / The Hill Academy). The Lions put one in to trail 2-4 with another three goal response from OCC tallying Sunday's third. Takaraonhiotakie Thompson (Akwasasne, NY / Massena HS) tallied his third as well to lead 8-3 to end the 1st period.

OCC pulled ahead 12-4 after Nassau opened up the 2nd with a shot passed OCC goalie, Keller O'Hern (Syracuse, NY / Westhill HS), before he went on to record 3 saves in the quarter. Penalties on Dominick Terrazzano (Billerica, MA / Billerica HS) and Chrishawn Hunter (Rochester, NY / Westtown School) gave the Lions a two man-up opportunity to put one in making it 12-5. A goal from Hunter and one for the Lions closed out the first half, 13-6.

Resnick kept the momentum in the circle in the second half, finishing the day 17-22 opening the half with a win and quick goal from Tehokwirathe Barreiro (Akwasasne, NY / Salmon River HS). Sunday tallied his fourth goal before the Lions scored four straight to pull back 12-16. Barreiro netted one to give the Lazers a spark to score five straight to end the 3rd quarter and lead 21-12.

A physical 12 penalty 4th quarter allowed three man-up goals for the Lions, but OCC continued staying out of arms reach with a pair from Region 3 and MSAC Player of the Year, Davin Bomberry (Six Nations, ON / The Hill Academy). The Lazers secured the 25-15 victory, advancing to Sunday's title game with the three time defending Champions, Harford Community College, whom the Lazers defeated in late March, 17-12. Bomberry and Sunday each had 4 goals in the victory.

The 1pm Championship led off with a pair for the Owls to open up. Thompson and Richard Martinez () each netted one to tie it 2-2 in the first 5 minutes. The Owls scored back to back nearing the end of the 1st before Sunday scored on a man-up opportunity on the assist from Bomberry to close the quarter, trailing 5-4.

Harford opened up the 2nd with 4 shots in the possession for O'Hern to tally two saves, before putting one in to lead 6-4. Two huge back-to-back goals from Hunter closed the gap all tied at 6-6, before the defending champs put in four straight goals to end the half and lead 10-6.

Hunter put on in just 18 seconds into the second half, trying to gain momentum. The Lazers took a total 14 shots and went 7-8 in the circle in the 3rd quarter with several opportunities. A pair from Buck DeLaMater (East Greenbush, NY / Columbia, HS) closed the quarter with the Lazers trailing 10-13.

OCC came out firing in the 4th quarter with two huge goals from Barreiro and one each from Sunday and Terrazzano to take a 14-13 lead with 13 minutes remaining, forcing a Harford timeout. The Owls came out to net three back-to-back. Terrazzano brought OCC back within one before the Owls netted two more to lead 18-15 with 4 minutes remaining. Thompson scored off a ground ball pickup from Miles Barnes (Horseheads, NY / Horseheads HS) with 1:15 on the clock. A sequence of turnovers in the final minute found another goal for Bomberry to bring the Lazers within one goal with 6 seconds remaining. But it wouldn't be enough as time ran out for the Lazers' opportunity, falling short 18-17. Hunter led with 4 goals. O'Hern tallied 12 saves in goal.

Onondaga finished the season with an overall record of 11-3.
