The Onondaga Community College baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a pair of losses to Division II Monroe Community College on Sunday at the Baseball Complex.
With the decisions, Onondaga concludes its regular season at 23-19 while the tribunes improve to 28-16.
Game One: Monroe 10, Onondaga 4The Lazers dug a deep hole for themselves in the top of the first after giving up six runs on four hits to the Tribunes before retiring the side.
After giving up one more run in the second, Onondaga would get on the board in the bottom of the third frame when a two-out error by the Tribunes allowed
John Larca to reach and the inning to continue. The next batter,
Avery Brooks, scored Larca from first base with an RBI-double down the right field line to make it a six-run game. As the inning wore on, the Lazers would add another run when Brooks came around to score on another infield misplay by Monroe to make it 7-2.
The Tribunes would tack on two more runs on two hits in the fifth inning to grow their lead to 9-2.
Onondaga would load the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but would only push one run across the plate when
Dylan Nardocci lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that plated
Justin Mathers to make it 9-3 in favor of the Tribunes.
Monroe would add another run in the seventh before
Ricky Ortiz doubled home the Lazers fourth and final run.
Reynaldo Hernandez took the loss for Onondaga and is now 5-3 on the season. Hernandez pitched three innings and allowed a season-high seven runs on seven hits.
Game Two: Monroe 5, Onondaga 4Monroe picked up where it left off in the first game as the Tribunes plated one run in the top of the first despite not recording a hit in the inning.
The Tribunes continued to test Onondaga's arms in the second inning. Monroe scored two more runs on back-to-back RBI singles to take a 3-0 lead.
The Lazers were able to generate some offense in the fourth inning after sending nine hitters to the plate and scoring four runs on four hits to take a 4-3 lead. Larca,
Tyler Wilson,
Nate Budge and
Paul Fitzgibbons each picked up an RBI in the inning.
The visiting Tribunes responded in the top of the fifth with another run after a lead-off single came around to score the tying run.
Seven innings wouldn't be enough to decide the outcome as the Tribunes scored what turned out to be the game-winning run in the top of the eighth to earn the win, 5-4.
Nate Boughton started for the Lazers but did not factor into the decision after going four innings and allowing three runs (two earned).Â
Luke Drancsak took the loss and moved to 2-3 after giving up the game-winning run in the eighth inning.
Onondaga will now await word on its opponent in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 Region III Championship to be played on May 9.
