Sears No Hits Tompkins Cortland - Lazers Sweep Panthers

Brittney Sears struck out 10 hitters and did not allow a hit as the nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College softball team swept the Tompkins Cortland Community College Panthers on Thursday in a Mid-State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Onondaga's Softball Complex.

With the wins, Onondaga, which ranked ninth overall in the latest NJCAA national poll, moves to 8-6 and 2-0 in the conference standings.  The Panthers fall to 0-2 on the season.

Game One: Tompkins Cortland 0, Onondaga 14 (Five Innings)

Sears was in complete control through five innings. The sophomore pitcher surrendered only one walk while recording 10 strikeouts.  For the season, Sears moved to 4-2 overall and lowered her ERA to 4.02.

After plating a run in each of the first two innings, the Lazers would drive in seven runs in the third inning on the strength three hits before plating five more runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a three-run triple off the bat of Morgan Neadom that scored Haley Albertson, Samantha Moon and Elizabeth Riegler.

Sarah Bregg, Sammi Loveless and Moon each picked up two hits in the win.  The Lazers belted 11 hits in the contest and drew eight walks in all.

Game Two: Tompkins Cortland 5, Onondaga 10 (Five Innings)

The Panthers ended their scoring drought in the first inning with a run, but quickly surrendered three in the home half of the first as Onondaga led off with three consecutive hits including RBI knocks by Newman and Hammond.

Onondaga would plate two more runs in the second when Bregg laced an inside the park homer scoring Morgan Neadom to give the Lazers a 5-1 advantage.

The Panthers would cut the deficit to two runs after scoring in the third and fourth innings, but five Onondaga runs six hits including Bregg's second inside the park homerun of the game staked the Lazers to a seven run lead, 10-3, heading into the top of the fifth.

Tompkins Cortland drew to within five runs in the top of the fifth inning after pushing two runs across on one hit and two Onondaga errors to make it 10-5.

Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the contest would be called as heavy rain moved into the area, giving Onondaga the win.

Elizabeth Jackson moved to 4-4 with the win and went the distance allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits.  She struck out five in the win.

The Lazers will continue their home stand at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will host North Country Community College at the Softball Complex.
