The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College softball team picked up two more wins on Saturday as the No.9 Lazers held North Country Community College to only three runs in 10 innings in a Region III doubleheader at Onondaga's Softball Complex.
The Lazers, who rank ninth in the latest NJCAA national poll, improve to 10-6 on the season while the Saints fall to 0-2.
Game One: North Country 3, Onondaga 11 (Five Innings)Just days after tossing a no-hitter,
Brittney Sears would surrender only one hit over five innings and allowed three first-inning runs en route to her fifth win of the season.
Trailing 3-0, the Lazers would have their biggest half inning of the season, scoring 10 runs on three hits. Onondaga would load the bases to start the game, however, the runners wouldn't remain on base for long as Sears launched a towering grand slam to stake the home team to a one-run lead, 4-3. The Lazers would load the bases again after back-to-back Saints' errors followed by a fielder's choice as Onondaga would push six more runs across the plate before North Country could escape the inning.
The Lazers would hold the Saints scoreless for the remainder of the game and earned a five-inning victory after
Lea Newman singled home what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Game Two: North Country 0, Onondaga 14 (Five Innings)The Lazers would build a 5-0 lead in the second inning after eight consecutive batters reached base with
Morgan Neadom,
Kyra Hunsinger,
Elizabeth Riegler and Newman each collecting a hit.
Onondaga would plate three more runs in the top of the third inning as Riegler and Newman drove in one run apiece to give the Lazers an 8-0 lead.
Onondaga would score six more times in all with three runs coming in the fourth and fifth innings before earning their second straight mercy rule decision, 14-0.
Elizabeth Jackson moved to 5-4 overall with the win. Jackson hurled five innings in the shutout and allowed only three hits while striking out eight.
The Lazers will put their four-game winning streak on the line with a split-squad doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they take on SUNY Orange before battling Mercyhurst in the nightcap.
