The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College softball team picked up two more wins after downing two different opponents in a split-squad doubleheader on Sunday. The No. 9 Lazers dispatched SUNY Orange, 13-4, before besting Mercyhurst Northeast in the second game, 1-0.
Onondaga, which has now won six straight, moves to 12-6 overall while SUNY Orange moves to 6-4 and Mercyhurst Northeast dips to 17-8.
Game One: SUNY Orange 4, Onondaga 13 The Lazers surrendered a run in the top of the first, only to bounce back with two of their own in the home half of play on back-to-back doubles by
Sarah Bregg and
Lea Newman.
After plating one run in the second, Onondaga would put up four more in the third inning after leading off the frame with three straight walks followed by RBI-singles from
Samantha Moon and
Kyra Hunsinger to put Onondaga up 7-2.
The Colts would get a pair back in the fourth, but failed to keep the Lazers at bay in the bottom of the inning as Onondaga plated six runs to make it 13-4. Hunsinger, Bregg and
Whitney Smith all collected at least one RBI in the process.
Sears picked up her second win in as many days after holding the Colts four runs (two earned) on eight hits. Sears sat five down by way of strikeout.
Game Two: Onondaga 1, Mercyhurst Northeast 0 The Lazers scored the game's only run in the fourth inning and
Elizabeth Jackson took care of the rest, shutting out the Saints after giving up just one base hit over seven innings of work. The win marked the sixth win of the freshman's season and second in the last two days. Over her last two starts, Jackson has not allowed a run in 12 innings of work and has only surrendered four hits in all.
The Lazers return home at 4 p.m. on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Mohawk Valley Community College at the Softball Complex.
