After dropping game one of a home doubleheader against Tompkins Cortland Community College on Thursday night, the Onondaga Community College baseball team managed to score a season-high 22 runs en route to a game two win at the Onondaga Baseball Complex.
With the two game result, the Lazers are now 8-8 overall and 4-2 in Mid-State Athletic Conference action while the Panthers move to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in MSAC contests.
Game One: Onondaga 3 Tompkins Cortland 4Onondaga fell behind early as Tompkins Cortland scored three runs in the first inning to go up 3-0. In the second inning however, a
Zack Ortiz double would help give the Lazers their first run of the day as
Drew Mallinder made it home from first base off of an error by the left-fielder.
After the Panthers scored another run in the third frame to push their lead to 4-1, Onondaga would make its move in the fifth inning. A wild pitch sent
Zack Ortiz to home plate while teammates
Justin Mathers and
Paul Fitzgibbons advanced to second and third base respectively. Then, Fitzgibbons managed to come home on an
Avery Brooks RBI sacrifice fly-out. The two-run fifth inning cut the Lazers' deficit to just one run at 4-3.
Onondaga's comeback bid would ultimately fall short however as Tompkins Cortland struck out the first three Lazers batters in the seventh inning to give the Panthers the 4-3 victory.
The loss went to
Nick Claver for Onondaga as the freshman gave up five hits and four earned runs while striking out two batters in six innings of work.
Mallinder and
Brandon Kapcinski each recorded a single in the loss.
Game Two: Onondaga 22 Tompkins Cortland 5 (5 innings)Once again the Lazers fell behind early to the Panthers as Tompkins Cortland grabbed a quick run in the top of the first inning. This time however, Onondaga would respond quickly and did not look back.
Ricky Ortiz kicked off the scoring for the Lazers in the bottom of the first frame with a triple to right field that sent
Eric Thompson home. A single from
John Larca followed by a double from Kapcinski would score Ortiz and Larca to give Onondaga a 3-1 lead heading into the second inning.
The Lazers grabbed a 7-1 advantage after a four-run third inning that saw Mallinder, Thompson,
Nate Budge, and Brooks score runs.
In the fourth, the Panthers would respond with a run of their own in the top of the inning before Onondaga exploded in the latter half. The Lazers made it through the entire batting order twice in the frame as they posted a season-high for runs in an inning after tallying 15. Kapcinski was strong in the inning as he totaled two hits and two RBI. The sophomore finished with a game-high three hits along with three RBI in the contest.
Onondaga would eventually go on to win the game by a final score of 22-5 through five innings of action. Seven different Lazers managed to record a hit in the contest while 10 different players scored a run for the winning side.
Other Onondaga leaders included Larca and
Ricky Ortiz who finished with four RBI and two hits apiece. Larca also got in on the scoring action as he, along with Thompson and Budge, each finished with three runs.
Alexander Way picked up his first win of his career on the mound as the Lazers' freshman allowed five hits and five runs (two earned) while striking out two batters in a complete five innings of action.
Next up for Onondaga is a home doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday against Erie Community College at the Onondaga Baseball Complex.Â
