Reynaldo Hernandez tossed a no-hitter in the opening game of a doubleheader at the Baseball Complex as the Onondaga Community College swept the Tompkins Cortland Community College Panthers on Tuesday night.
With the wins, Onondaga improves to 7-7 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference standings while the Panthers dip to 6-5 overall and move to 0-2 in conference play.
Game One: Onondaga 13, Tompkins Cortland 0Hernandez was nearly perfect on the day after tossing seven innings of no-hit shutout ball. The lefthander struck out 11 in the game and only allowed one walk to pick up his third win of the season. Hernandez owns a 1.23 earned run average and has amassed 28 strikeouts in 23 innings of work this season.
Nate Budge would stake the Lazers to a one run lead in the third inning after reaching first and advancing around the horn on a Panthers' error. Budge would late score on an out to give Onondaga the 1-0 advantage.
Onondaga would add four more in the fifth after
Ricky Ortiz delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to put the Lazers up 3-0.
Dylan Nardocci would cap the inning with a deep triple that rolled all the way to the right center field fence, scoring two more in the process.
The Lazers would plate two more in the sixth inning on one hit and a Tompkins Cortland error.Â
Zack Ortiz picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly and
Nate Budge scored on an errant throw by the Panthers' catcher to make it 7-0.
Onondaga would bat around in the seventh inning and nearly double its lead with six runs after two costly errors by the Panthers' infield and four hits including RBI knocks by
Brandon Kapcinski and
John Larca pushed the Lazers' lead to 13-0.
Game Two: Onondaga 5, Tompkins Cortland 2Drew Mallinder got Onondaga on the board in the second frame after walking and coming around to score on an error by the Panther's centerfielder. Three batters later, Larca singled home the Lazers' second run of the inning and was knocked in by
Avery Brooks to give Onondaga a 3-0 lead.
The Lazers added a fourth run in the fourth inning when a leadoff walk by
Zack Ortiz came around to score on an RBI-single from Brooks.
Tompkins Cortland would end a 10 inning scoreless drought with a homerun over the right field fences but three straight strikeouts by Boughton would end the inning with Onondaga still holding a 4-1 lead.
Zack Ortiz would get the run back for Onondaga in the fifth inning with an RBI-single that pushed
Paul Fitzgibbons across the plate to give the Lazers a 5-1 edge.
Nate Boughton earned his third win of the season (3-2) after dealing a complete game and surrendering two runs on two hits. The freshman hurler retired 12 by way of strikes.
The two teams will battle it out again at 4 p.m. on Thursday at the Baseball Complex.
