Cristen Nichols earned her 100th career win in the Lazers' dugout as the nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College softball team split with Cayuga in a Mid-State Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday at the Softball Complex. Prior to the game, Onondaga celebrated the accomplishments of its sophomore class.
With the split, Onondaga moves to 23-13 and 5-3 in the conference standings while the Spartans climb to 3-17 overall and 3-5 in the MSAC standings.
Game One: Cayuga 4, Onondaga 3Onondaga would take a 1-0 lead I the bottom of the first inning after
Chantel Hammond smacked a two-out single and proceeded to steal second. Two batters later,
Sammi Loveless would line a base hit to left field to score Hammond in the process.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Cayuga would knot the game at 1-1 after driving in the tying run on an infield error on the Lazers.
The Lazers would get the run back in the home half of the fourth when a Spartan's error allowed
Sarah Bregg to reach base and the inning to continue. After swiping second base, Bregg would give Onondaga a one-run advantage after
Lea Newman ripped an RBI-single up the middle to stake the Lazers to 2-1 lead.
Cayuga would double up the Lazers in the sixth inning after two costly infield errors by the Lazers allowed two unearned runs to cross home plate giving the visitors their first lead of the afternoon, 4-2.
Onondaga plated another run in the bottom of the sixth, but would be unable to put the tying run on the base as Cayuga held on for the 4-3 win.
Brittney Sears suffered the loss for Onondaga after going seven innings and giving up four runs (two earned) with seven strikeouts to her credit.
Game Two: Cayuga 1, Onondaga 14Onondaga would strike first in the second inning after a sacrifice bunt would move runners into scoring position allowing
Kyra Hunsinger to deliver an RBI poke up the middle to give the Lazers a 1-0 lead. Onondaga would load the bases as the inning continued, but would be unable to add to its lead as the Spartans induced a groundout to the pitcher to retire the side.
The Lazers opened the flood gates in the fifth inning after sending 11 batters to the dish, which lead to five runs. Four different players were credited with an RBI in the inning with Hunsinger picking up two more after a bases-loaded single that scored
Samantha Moon and
Morgan Neadom to give the Lazers a 6-0 advantage.
Cayuga was able to plate an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, but eight more runs from Onondaga in the sixth sealed the win.
Elizabeth Jackson picked up her eighth win of the season after throwing six innings and allowing only three hits.
The Lazers will close out their regular season with four straight road games beginning at 3 p.m. on Thursday when they tackle SUNY Broome in Binghamton.
