Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Wins 11th Consecutive Region III Championship

Nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College men's lacrosse won its 11th straight NJCAA Region III Championship on Sunday and extended its own NJCAA record for consecutive wins across all sports and divisions with a 24-4 win over fourth-ranked Genesee Community College in front of a packed house at David W. Murphy Field.

With the win, Onondaga (16-0) has now posted a victory in 103 consecutive games while the Cougars fall to 11-4 this season.  The win marked the second for Onondaga this season against Genesee as the Lazers bettered the Cougars, 16-8, back on March 28 of this year.

The Lazers would break a 0-0 tie at 11:25 when Brine Rice corralled the Nick Sawyer pass and beat the Cougars' keeper to take a 1-0 lead.

Genesee would counter at 7:30 with a man-up goal to knot the score at one goal apiece, but the Lazers would begin to pull away as the first quarter wore on as Sawyer and Matt Bennett scored goals just seven second apart to give Onondaga a 3-1 lead.

Bennett would notch two more goals to close out the opening quarter before Sawyer staked the Lazers to a 6-1 lead just 12 seconds into the second stanza with Rice earning another assist.

Sawyer's tally would be the start of a four-goal run for Onondaga before the Cougars would begin to click with two goals of their own in a span of two minutes to cut the deficit to seven goals, 10-3.

Three more goals over the half's final three minutes including an unassisted tally from Sean Ohlhaver would give the Lazers a 13-3 lead at intermission.

Coming out of the halftime break, Genesee would score an unassisted mark in the third quarter's opening minute, but that would prove to be its final goal of the game as Onondaga controlled possession for a majority of the second half leading to 11 unanswered goals.

"This was a great win for our guys," said Onondaga head coach, Chuck Wilbur.  "We played hard against a great team and I'm really proud of everyone's effort.  Today brings us one step closer to our ultimate goal, which is to win another national championship."

Bennett was nothing short of sensational for Onondaga as the freshman attack posted a game-high eight points on six goals and two assists.  Bennett combined to post 19 points in the three-game tournament and would be named the Championship's Most Valuable Player as a result.  Tyson Bell, Holden McDonald, Oakley Thomas, Sean Lattimore were each named to the All-Tournament team along with Jimmy Smith and Cyrus Spruce from Genesee, Kyle Hewlett and Mike Patjane from Dean and Nashwan Hoffman from Herkimer.

Lattimore scored four goals on a game-high 10 shots in the win along with two assists while Sawyer would finish with five points on three goals and two assists.  Rice tallied six points in all with three goals of his own along with a game-high three helpers.  Ohlhaver found the back of the net twice for Onondaga on eight shots.  Jack Centore, Nicholas Garbarino, Jesse Ondrako, Tom Koster, Thomas and Bell each scored one goal for the Lazers.

McDonald put up a wall all game in goal for the Lazers and picked up another win to move to 14-0 after turning away 10 shots in 60 minutes of action.

Sam Watts and Doug Jamieson each won eight face-offs for Onondaga while Seth DeLisle was 3-for-3 in draw opportunities.

Onondaga will continue its quest for another national championship beginning May 9 when it travels to Baltimore, MD. for the 2015 NJCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship.  The top-ranked Lazers have won eight of the last nine national titles including the last six.
