The top-ranked Onondaga Community College men's lacrosse team will defend its crown after defeating the Genesee Community College Cougars, 17-6, in the semifinal round of the 2015 NJCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship on Saturday in Baltimore, Md.
With the win, Onondaga, which holds the top overall seed in the championship, moved to 17-0 and extended its NJCAA record for consecutive wins across all sports and divisions to 104 consecutive victories. Genesee, which entered the day as the fourth overall seed, fell to the Lazers for the third time this season and concluded its season at 12-5.
"The guys played hard today, no doubt about it," said Onondaga head coach,
Chuck Wilbur. "Genesee has played us twice before today and was pretty familiar with our sets, but I think the guys really controlled the ball and got the job done. Now we're in a position to reach our goal, which is another national championship."
The game was closely contested in the first 15 minutes of play as Genesee jumped out to an early lead with a goal five minutes in at 10:02.
The lead would be the last for the Cougars, however, as the Lazers quickly took a 3-1 lead with three goals in the next three minutes with
Tyson Bell,
Nicholas Garbarino and
Nick Sawyer each finding the back of the net to give Onondaga a 3-1 advantage.
The Cougars would answer with a goal at 5:36, but Onondaga closed out the first quarter with two unanswered goals including a man-up tally by
Sean Lattimore to hold a 5-2 lead after one quarter of play.
Defense would prove to be the theme in the second stanza as the two teams combined for only five goals with Onondaga netting the first three.
The quarter featured eight combined turnovers before the Cougars could close the gap with two goals in the final three minutes of the half to make it 8-4 in favor of the Lazers.
Onondaga would pull away in the third quarter and used a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach. Genesee would tally two goals within one minute, but the Lazers answered with three game's final three goals including a pair of man-up goals from Garbarino and
Jack Centore to earn the win.
14 different players recorded at least one point with
Matt Bennett leading the way with four points on three goals and an assist. Sawyer and Garbarino each recorded a hat trick while
Kyle Killen found nylon twice.Â
Brine Rice totaled a game-high three assists in the win and Lattimore finished with one goal and one helper.
Defensively, Onondaga caused eight turnovers with

Collin Twombly,
Dalton Wenzel,

Dan Scanlon each creating one turnover.
Holden McDonald made 14 saves in nearly 40 of action in net while

The Lazers will take on third-seeded CCBC-Essex, which downed second-seeded Nassau in a 17-16 thriller in the afternoon's other semifinal for the 2015 NJCAA Men' Lacrosse National Championship at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Baltimore, Md. The Lazers defeated the Knights, 11-6, earlier in the season.
