Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 1 Lazers Swat Hornets in Region III Quarterfinal

The top-ranked Onondaga Community College men's lacrosse team tied a season-high in goals scored and extended its NJCAA all-time record for consecutive victories across all sports and divisions with its 101st straight win after swatting the SUNY Broome Hornets, 33-1, on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Region III Men's Lacrosse Championship at a rain-soaked David W. Murphy Field.

No. 1 Onondaga, which received the top overall seed in the tournament, moved to 14-0 on the season while SUNY Broome's season came to an end with a 5-9 overall mark.

The Lazers didn't waste any time putting Broome into a deep hole as Onondaga scored early and often.  Sean Ohlhaver scored 52 seconds into the contest to spark an 8-0 run that included a stretch of three goals in a span of 18 seconds before SUNY Broome scored its lone goal of the afternoon with 7:11 left to play in the opening quarter.

Onondaga would extend its lead as the first quarter wore on, scoring five more goals including two from Matt Bennett to hold a 14-1 advantage after 15 minutes of action.

Ohlhaver started the second frame in similar fashion after dodging past Broome's midfielders before finding the back of the net to begin what turned out to be 10 unanswered Onondaga goals before the halftime horn ended the onslaught.

The visiting Hornets did little to halt Onondaga's momentum in the second half giving way to six marks in the third including a pair of goals from Jack Centore before the Lazers closed out the contest with four tallies in the final stanza.

The Lazers controlled the pace throughout after gaining 31 of the game's 36 face-offs.  Sam Watts, the reigning NJCAA Region III Male Athlete of the Week, won 9-of-11 draws and had four groundballs while Seth DeLisle earned wins in 11-of-12 chances with eight groundballs.  Zach Lohman and Doug Jamieson combined to win 11 face-offs in 13 opportunities.

23 different players tallied at least one point for Onondaga led by Bennett's five points on two goals and a game-high three assists.  Ohlhaver took seven shots and find nylon three times while Parrish Young, Sean Lattimore, Max Bosworth, Nicholas Garbarino, Tyler Griffo, Mac Morgan, Tom Pritchard and DeLisle all scored two goals apiece.  Kyle Killen and Centore totaled three points in all.

Onondaga enjoyed a huge shot advantage after peppering the cage 81 times compared to only 12 for SUNY Broome.  The Lazers were afforded several extra possessions in the game after collecting 58 groundballs – 41 more than the Hornets were able to scoop up.

The No. 1 Lazers will look for their 102nd straight win when they host fourth-seeded Herkimer County Community College at 12 p.m. on Saturday at David W. Murphy Field.  Herkimer earned its way into the semifinals after claiming an 11-10 win in overtime against fifth-seeded SUNY Delhi.  The Lazers recently defeated the Generals, 27-5, back on April 15.
