Game Recap: Softball |

Lazers Toppled by Division II Mercyhurst

The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College fell in both games to Division II Mercyhurst Northeast on Sunday at Onondaga's Softball Complex despite playing into the ninth inning of the nightcap.

The No. 9 Lazers falls to 17-9 with the losses while the Saints climb to 22-9 overall.

Game One: Mercyhurst NE 11, Onondaga 0 (Sixth Inning)

Just 24 hours after recording a perfect game, the Lazers would be on the opposite end of a no-hitter as Onondaga fell victim to the strikeout 14 times.

After exchanging four scoreless innings, the Lazers would put themselves in a five-run hole as Mercyhurst used seven hits including an RBI-triple and a two-run single to take a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

Mercyhurst would belt seven more hits in the top of the sixth en route to six runs as the visiting Saints claimed an 11-0 lead.

The Lazers would put a runner on in the home half of the sixth, but could not push a run across as Mercyhurst earned the 11-0 win.

Brittney Sears started the game but did not factor in the decision after throwing three innings of shutout ball.  Elizabeth Riegler took the loss in relief and moved to 1-1 on the season after surrendering 10 hits and eight runs (seven earned) in two innings.

Game Two: Mercyhurst 6, Onondaga 5 (Nine Innings)

Onondaga plated its first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning after Samantha Moon led off the frame with a walk and eventually scored on an infield error by the Saints.

The Lazers extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning after connecting on four hits with Moon slapping an RBI-triple before being knocked in on a sacrifice fly by Kyra Hunsiger.

Mercyhurst would tie the game in the top of the sixth inning after connecting on four singles to knot things at 3-3.

The home team was poised to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after loading the bases before an out had been recorded but as quick as the Saints worked into trouble, they worked out of it recording two of three outs via strikes to keep things tied at 3-3.

Chantel Hammond represented the winning run after leading off the seventh with a single, but would be stranded at first base after the Lazers hit into three quick outs.

Both teams would plate a run apiece in the eighth inning but the Saints would score what turned out to be the game-winner in the top of the ninth to escape with a 6-5 win.

Elizabeth Jackson went the distance but would be credited with the loss to bring her season mark to 7-6.

The Lazers begin a three-series road trip beginning at 3 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel to Herkimer to take on the nationally-ranked Herkimer County Community College Generals.
