Just nine days after pitching a no-hitter,
Brittney Sears threw a perfect game as the nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College softball team outscored Columbia-Greene, 30-2, in a two-game sweep on Saturday at the Softball Complex. It was the program's first perfect game in recent memory.
With the wins, Onondaga improves to 10-games over the .500 mark at 17-7 while the Twins fall to 1-7 on the season.
Game One: Columbia Greene 0, Onondaga 16Sears was a force to be reckoned with after recording nearly half of the game's out via strikes. The sophomore pitcher also helped her own cause at the plate going 2-for-2 with RBI on a double and a homerun. Sears improved to 8-2 on the season and owns a 3.80 earned run average.
The Lazers scored three runs in the bottom of the first on three hits with the big blow coming off Sears' bat in the form of a two-run bomb.
Onondaga would double its lead in the second inning on four hits and a walk and would go on to add nine runs in the third to earn the mercy-rule win.
Game Two: Columbia Greene 2, Onondaga 13Elizabeth Riegler followed nearly followed suit in the nightcap, holding the Twins to two runs on only two base hits as the freshman earned her first collegiate win in the process.
Sarah Bregg led off the game with a long ball to left while
Chantel Hammond came around to score on a Twins' error to stake the Lazers to a 2-0 lead in the first.
Columbia Greene would halve the deficit after a leadoff double came around to score, only to see the Lazers take a 5-1 lead in the third after smacking four hits including a two-run triple off the bat of
Samantha Moon.
Onondaga would open things up in the fourth inning after scoring five more runs on three hits including two doubles along with two fielding mishaps by Columbia Greene to take an 11-1 lead.
The Twins would add a run later in the contest, but Onondaga would plate two more in the final frame for another mercy-rule decision.
The No. 9 Lazers will look to ride today's momentum when they return to the mix at 1 p.m. on Sunday for a doubleheader against Division II Mercyhurst Northeast at the Softball Complex. The Lazers emerged a 1-0 winner against the Saints last week.
