Softball Splits at Corning

The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College softball team pushed its winning streak to nine games before falling in the second leg of a conference doubleheader to Corning Community College on Thursday in Corning.

With the split, No. 9 Onondaga moves to 15-7 while the Red Barons end the day at 4-8.

Game One: Onondaga 3, Corning 2

Brittney Sears pitched seven strong innings and earned her eighth win of the year after surrendering two unearned runs late in the seventh inning.  Sears scattered three hit and walked six, but retired six batters on strikes.

After being held off the board through five innings, Onondaga would plate three runs in the sixth with Kyra Hunsiger and Caitlin Wormuth picking up RBI singles.

Corning would score two in the final inning and had the winning run at the plate, but it was not to be as Sears induced a fly out to preserve the win for the Lazers.

Game Two: Onondaga 9, Corning 16

The Red Barons held a 1-0 lead heading into the second inning when Elizabeth Riegler launched a towering three-run shot that scored Samantha Moon and Morgan Neadom to stake the visitors to a 3-1 advantage.

Corning responded with two runs in the third and would tie the contest at four runs apiece after a leadoff double came around to score.

Corning's lead would eventually swell to 11-4, but another homerun by Riegler, this time a two-run blast, would give Onondaga some hope as the Lazers trailed 11-7 heading into the seventh.

The red Barons continued to pepper Onondaga's fielders, pushing five more runs home to claim a 16-7 lead.

Onondaga would score two more runs in its final at-bats, but could not overcome the deficit as Corning earned the 16-9 win.

Onondaga would use three pitchers in all with Elizabeth Jackson taking the loss for the Lazers after surrendering four runs (two earned) over four innings.

The Lazers will look to keep their momentum going beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they host Columbia Greene Community College in a Region III doubleheader at Onondaga's Softball Complex.
