Brooks' Walk-Off Gives Onondaga Sweep of Corning

The Onondaga Community College baseball swept the Corning Community College Red Barons on Tuesday evening in a conference doubleheader at Onondaga's Baseball Complex.

The pair of wins evens the Lazers' record at 11-11 and improves their mark in conference plat to 6-2 while Corning falls to 3-7 (1-3 MSAC).

Game One: Corning 2, Onondaga 12 (Five Innings)

After a scoreless first inning, Onondaga put four runs on the board in the bottom of the second.  Drew Mallinder led off the frame with a triple to right field and came around to score on a two-run base knock by Nate Budge.  The Lazers scored their third and fourth runs on a bloop-double by Avery Brooks that got past Corning's right fielder allowing Budge and John Larca to scurry home.

Onondaga would bat around and extended its lead to 9-0 in the third inning after its first two batters reached base with a single and error, respectively.  The Red Barons would get two quick outs, but Justin Mathers roped a single to right field to drive in Brandon Kapcinski and Mallinder before crossing home plate on an RBI-single from Larca.  As the inning wore on, Brooks would reach on a single and moved to second after another costly Corning error that allowed Larca to advance all the way home from first base.  Brooks would later score on a base hit up the middle by Ricky Ortiz before the Red Barons could escape the jam.  The frame lasted 22 minutes and saw the Lazers rip five hits while the Red Barons committed three errors in total.

Corning would cut the deficit to seven runs in the top of the fourth after coming up with a pair of runs on three hits.  The Red Barons had runners on second and third, but were unable to break things open.

The Lazers would plate two more runs in the fifth inning thanks in part to another misplay by Corning to earn the 12-2 mercy-rule win.

Nick Claver earned his first collegiate win in the process after going five innings and scattering four hits.  The freshman hurler retired three by way of strikeout.

Game Two: Corning 3, Onondaga 4

The Red Barons struck first, scoring twice in the top of the first before giving one back in the home half of the inning when Ricky Ortiz grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Larca to make it 2-1 in the visitors favor.

Corning would make it 3-1 in the top of the second inning after a leadoff single came around to score.

Onondaga would tie the game in the fifth inning after Budge led off with a single and came around to score on a groundout by Brooks.   Larca worked his way around the bases and would eventually score on a pitch in the dirt to knot the game at threes.

After failing to score in the sixth inning, Onondaga would have last licks in the seventh and didn't disappoint.  Larca drew a hard-fought walk and was replace at first by Eric Thompson who promptly swiped second base.  Brooks would step to the plate and delivered a walk-off base hit to right field that scored the game's winning run.

Luke Drancsak earned the win in relief after throwing an inning of no run ball.

The Lazers and Red Barons will battle again at 2 p.m. on Thursday as Onondaga travels to Corning for a conference doubleheader.
