Lazers Tie NJCAA All-Time Record for Consecutive Wins Across all Sports

Onondaga wins 97th straight game

History was made on Saturday at Onondaga Community College's David W. Murphy Field as the top-ranked Onondaga men's lacrosse team tied the Herkimer County Community College men's soccer program for the National Junior College Athletic Association's all-time record for consecutive wins across all sports when the Lazers earned their 97th straight win after defeating Bridgton Academy, 30-2.  The record, which had been established between 1994-1997, stood unopposed for nearly 20 years until today.

Onondaga's last loss came in a one-point defeat to Nassau Community College on March 27, 2010 and since that time, the Lazers have been nearly invincible, dominating at every facet of the game.  Head coach Chuck Wilbur's squads have outscored their opponents by an eye-popping 2, 449-414 and have held their opponents to two goals of less 41 times en route to five national championships in that span.

Since the winning streak's inception, the Lazers have bested numerous nationally-ranked teams and have had over 100 student-athletes move on to continue their playing career at the NCAA level with four players being drafted into the National Lacrosse League.

"It's a tremendous accomplishment for the program," said Wilbur. "I'm proud of all the guys that have contributed to our successes over the years.  This is special, no doubt about it, but our goal remains the same and that's to win a national championship."

Onondaga put the Wolverines in its rearview mirror quickly, scoring four goals in a span of nearly four minutes before Bridgton could stop the bleeding with a man-up tally of its own.

Bridgton's goal at 10:27 of the first quarter would be its last until midway through the final frame as Onondaga forced the Wolverines into 26 turnovers and peppered their goalies with 90 shots in-between.

The Lazers would score 11 goals in the opening stanza with Matt Bennett notching three marks before Onondaga scored nine more in the second quarter to hold a commanding 20-1 advantage at intermission.

The Lazers continued their offensive onslaught in the third quarter as six different players found the back of the net including a pair of goals from Brady Hoose to stake the home team to a 27-1 lead.

15 minutes away from making their mark in the NJCAA's record book, the Lazers possessed the ball throughout the final quarter.  Zachary Bulak and Joseph Ondrako scored back-to-back goals before the Wolverines ended a nearly 47-minute scoring drought with their second tally of the game.

Nathan Maracle put the icing on the cake for Onondaga with a behind-the-back goal as Onondaga chased the Wolverines, 30-2.

Onondaga was nearly perfect in the contest, winning all but four face-offs (29-for-33) while clearing the ball out of its zone 15 times in 15 attempts.

Bennett set a career-high with six goals and tied another career-best with eight points in the win.  Sean Lattimore had five points on three goals and two assists while Parrish Young and Kyle Killen each nailed down a hat trick with three goals apiece. Adam Bomberry had three points to go along with a game-high eight groundballs.  Alex Waelder, Tom Koster, Joseph Ondrako, Tyson Bell, Jesse Ondrako, Nicholas Garbarino and Bulak each finished with two points on the day.

Holden McDonald (8-0) started in net and only allowed one goal after turning away one shot.  Jack Sweeney and Sean Rhodes also saw action.

Sam Watts won 10-of-11 face-offs while Seth DeLisle was a perfect 8-for-8 at X.

The No. 1 Lazers now sit just one win away from breaking the historic record and will have their chance to lay claim at 4 p.m. on Monday when they host Mohawk Valley Community College.
